Air con help... no cold and odd noise

Featured Replies

Hi all, Wondering if anyone can help with my air con problem.

Whenever I turn on the AC I get an odd noise that seems to come from the vents, I have attached a video which kid of shows it but its much louder in real life.

The AC also doesn't blow cold, I think the compressor is kicking in so hopefully it just needs a re gas, but the noise is an odd one!

Any help would be great .

Mine was similar. Regas sorted it. Having said that, my condenser was leaking, hence the loss of gas, but once working properly it was silent.

Hi, mines is doing the same, when you say the "condenser was leaking " what was changed and was it easy to do?

The condenser was changed. It's the radiator looking thing right at the front of the car in front of the other rads. I did it because it was leaking, but that's the only reason why, it's not like it's a thing you need to do as many cars just need a regas. Dealer would charge about £700, I got a local aircon expert to change and regas mine for £300 all in. Anyone who does aircon can do a check to see if it's got a leak or just low and ifit's leaking they should be able to pinpoint where it's leaking from fairly easily. Illegal to regas if it'll go to atmosphere so they won't just top it up, they have to work out why it isn't holding first.

Cheers, for that, got told yesterday it was the radiator, which took to mean condenser, so I will see how much it will cost me.

Condensers can fail through being hit by small road debris. Take a look at the front of yours for flattened fins and debris collected below it.

Search on here as there have been many threads in past years detailing where to buy a plastic mesh and how to fit it.

First thing I did when I got the car.

When fitting my  mesh I found small pieces of concrete that had come through the grill!

Strongly recommend you fit a mesh as mentioned in other posts. It is easy to do.

Hi mate thank you for your advice, I had mine checked, no holes, just old(I know how it feels),.

Bloke who changed my condenser said it's actually quite rare to be hit by stones, he has had almost no incidents and has changed hundreds if not thousands of aircon bits on VAG cars in particular (I asked him specifically about it).

In terms of meshing, it's what I did with mine, but I've subsquently found out from this site that VW do a golf one that'll fit exactly on the octy for about £16-18 or so. It's about 8 screws/clips and a facia. Search on here and you'll come across the part numbers.

Hi. Mate thanks for th reply, had a new condenser fitted, now just need some warm weather,
