Best tools to buy for replacing front wheel bearings

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have bought two new SKF front wheel bearings for my MK1, and would like to try and change them my self.

I need some special tools, and am wondering what to aquire.

I can either buy a gear pulling kit like this one: https://www.vidaxl.dk/e/8718475874461

Or I can buy a hydraulic press like this one: https://www.vidaxl.dk/e/8718475831785

I know that the recommendation is to let a work shop change the bearings, but I would like to give it a go myself. I'm just not sure what tools would serve me best.

Is a 12 ton press even capable of getting the job done?

Thanking in advance.

Hi

I got one similar to the top link for around £50GBP off eBay earlier in the year and it worked perfectly. Just make sure you get it straight as possible to wind the new one in, and make sure you press against the outer of the new bearing than the inner, as pressing against the inner to get it in will damage it.

If it's correctly aligned, there's not much effort required.

Good luck!
