Oil Pressure Light flashing

Featured Replies

Hi, just bought myself a mk2 vrs diesel and have some issues going on already. Picked it up and drove it the 200 motorway miles home. Ran fine for the first hour or so, brought it up to speed gently and then was exploring the engine and the feel of the turbo, then I stopped for food and fuel and when I got going again the oil pressure light came on. Pulled over and checked the levels which were pretty low. Sidled along to the next services and topped things up, let it all cool down. However when I fired up the engine the light beeped up again. Being 140 odd miles from home, I decided to complete my journey at 45mph with the engine almost idling at 1200rpm. It ran ok. I got home.

Other issues are that it has been remapped aggressively and the egr removed and I believe the turbo is on the way out. I am being followed by the turbo police sirens at low revs. The idle is also a little tractor ish and that with the wee vibration when revs drop down suggests that the flywheel is fkucked. Clutch actually feels ok and the gearbox not crunchy or stiff but I am coming out of a pd130 passat with 180k on the original clutch and box so my senses arent exactly fine tuned to these details.

I read a little about pick up pipes from the sump becoming blocked, but it seems to have used the oil during my initial spirited driving phase before maintaining level during the trundle up the road. So something related to the turbo?

I will get it into the garage at the earliest opportunity and have another vehicle to drive for the meantime. Pressure test the system and then track down a leak?ha that sounds hopeful. Look into replacing the turbo and clutch, flywheel and having it remapped either down to standard or with a smoother power curve low down. At the moment the wheels spin on any more than half throttle in 1st and 2nd.

The police siren noise is caused by failed bearings in the turbo. My guess is that oil is going out through those bearings, both into the inlet air and into the exhaust gasses.

Cheers, and then this is causing the loss in oil pressure that is causing the warning light to display? If that is the case then when I have topped up levels and fire it up to idle why is it coming on immediately? Will the light sound every time I start the engine now until reset or only when it detects a current low pressure?

Is it possible the oil pump has failed?I read a thread on here about 07s having an issue with that, I also read a contradictory post saying none of the Octavias have known oil pump issues.

I really hope the oil that comes out of the sump when I get is changed, alongside whichever component is causing the issue, is clean and hath no bits of engine in it.

Before setting off had you dipped the oil with a cold engine or even a warm one to see there was enough oil in?

I did. Oil was good, not to the max but about 3/4 there the most ridiculous dipstick I have come across, black spherical thing which meant it took me a couple of tries to convince myself of the level.

link noted thanks

was that 3/4 with stone cold engine and oil?   That was low to start with then, you want the oil level up on area A when at operating temperature.

Yep with the engine cold.

It took 1.5l to top it up. The level was low when I did this, like right towards the bottom of the stick.
