1.4 8v mpi cylinder head bolt thread

Featured Replies

Anyone know the thread for the cylinder head bolts on a 1.4 8v mpi engine? A crusty one snapped in the block so I'm hoping to drill it out and helpful it. Already tried a soaking it overnight in wd40, blow torch on it while using  stud extractor on a breaker bar and it is stuck fast.

Since it's an alloy block you should be able to dissolve it out using the Alum trick (google it), a lot easier than drilling it and wrecking the threads!

Oh nice one! Just been looking at it and it looks like you may have saved the day. I had never heard of this before but definitely going to give it a go, I will report back once it is done.

How long do you reckon it will need to soak for?

A long time, keeping the solution hot speeds it up.

Or as I saw Fuzz Townshend use on Car SOS, see if you can borrow an induction heater to just heat the stud without damaging the aluminium. He used one to get a snapped stud out of a Datsun 240z cylinder head. Now proprietary kit is a bit pricey, but they are out there so worth making enquiries to see if you can beg steal or borrow one.

That would work of it was external but it is about 2 inches down a hole so no good.

I have bought some alum powder so hopefully it will be here in a few days and I can dissolve it out.

Fingers crossed for you. Be patient.

Only thing I established about the thread is that it's M11.  Couldn't work out the pitch from anything I found online, 1.25 is my best guess scaling off a photo of one of the bolts. Easy enough for you to measure though, just measure peak to peak 10 threads on one of the bolts that did come out OK,  and divide the number of mm by 10.

In theory the dissolving should remove all the bolt/steel, in practice  think I'd want to run a tap down it to be sure it's clear and good to go with a new bolt.  You could fashion a tap out of one of the old bolts by filing a triangular cut-out (or two) lengthways up the thread and then screwing that in gently, maybe with a bit of grease on it to retain swarf.

Brilliant info and advise as usual, thank you very much!

Yeah I think it is M11 x 1.5 but it could be 1.25, will have to investigate further if it comes to it.

Alum did bugger all, wife has decided she doesn't want to spend anymore money on the car and wants a mk2 fabia 1.4/1.6 16V estate so I'm breaking the car now.
