The transition from one car to the next...uugh

Featured Replies

It's never a good time is it - or is it? Maybe some of you manage to handle the process better but for us - it's an MOT failure on an old car and a sudden rush to buy a new (used) one when I really haven't even started thinking about buying a car of any sort. Anyway - I'm there again and if it's not a Ford Focus (which is what we've had for the last ~10 years) it looks like it will be a Skoda - hence I'm here searching through previous threads and looking to get a clearer picture on what Skoda offers and we need & want - the car we had 10 years ago had to factor in having 2 kids but one is at uni and the other left last year so TBH - we don't really have much need for the back seats - only boot space for going away - sometimes camping.... anyway I started looking at Yeti and Roomster and haven't so far been won over by either - I'll be asking about that and then on top of that we have the issue of whether to buy a diesel again (we loved the extra torque with the Focus - power to climb up narrow winding steep roads in the lake District at slow speeds) - anyway - I'll gets some threads started in the right places once I've trawled through to see what's on here already.

PS - the reason Skoda is on the radar is that by eldest daughter bought her first car - a 1.2L 2012 Fabia - she loves it - and she went for that because her bf has one (a newer one) and his parents both have a Roomster each (they have a dog)

cheers

Neil

Both those things say Octavia 2.0 TDI to me ... I just bought one (used) boot is ma-hoosive, diesel so plenty of low end torque and mine does 60+mpg ;)

I like the Octavia but my wife will be driving this car and she works at a hospital where the staff parking is very cramped - it's always difficult to find spaces wide enough because people park badly and people's cars are always getting scraped and pranged so she's ruled it out on the basis that she'll find it difficult to park (or that it'll get damaged) - our other car - a Micra got badly damaged on her works car park when she used it one day (probably because the Focus was in the garage for something or MOT) - she thinks it was a Jeep type vehicle that was parked next to her one day when it reversed out as the damage looks like a bumped that has scraped the Micra most of the way down the passenger side - she asked the security to look for camera footage but they wouldn't or couldn't be ar*ed so we'll never know what happened. The Focus was my car when I was working and she used the Micra but when I quit work 9 years ago we swapped as I now work from home and I use the Micra less than 3000 miles a year. If it was me I've liked the Octavia estate from the moment I first saw one.

A warm welcome Neil.  I too have just ventured into Skoda and bought the Octavia 1.5TSI last year.  Must agree the boot is huge, recently managed to lose some shopping among all the empty bags!

Mine is the hatch but be careful if opening the tailgate, as it goes up for miles and can touch the garage door if parked inside.

might be a silly suggestion let her use the beat up micra for work and use the octavia as a weekend car

Well I admire your lateral thinking cssuk - I hadn't thought of that at all. She's definitely not going to be happy with that though - she complains all the time about the heaters in the Focus being slow to heat up and the air con for being slow to regulate temperature - the Micra is even worse in those respects plus she complains about the radio in the Focus - we really should have changed that years ago - the Micra is no better. We have just started looking at the Fabia Estates - I like the Superb and the Octavia but she really thinks they are too big for parking at work. Also - she is the main breadwinner these days so she deserves to have what she wants.  I'm after boot-space - I hate packing for weekends away or holidays and having to mess about trying to cram things in the boot when there really isn't enough space.

superbs are big but you soon get used, my other half did she drives it more than me and used to drive a 207cc, i have a co car as well despite the fact thats free and newer we normally use the skoda come weekends its that good, parking sensors both ends help and ours has all the goodies heated seats, windscreen, climate which is brilliant auto parking, electric memory seats and enough room in the back for a small family try a test drive she will be sold and 45+mpg

Hi Neil,

AS well as Fabia estates, how about the Rapid, they always look to me like an Octavia that's been on a "narrowing" diet.

Appear to be available as hatch/saloon, and Spaceback. Never tried either, but I see a lot of the saloon-style hatch being used as private hire taxis in Leeds, Wakefield etc, alongside plentiful Octavias and the occasional Superb.  Have read on here that the Fabia estate has more luggage space than the Rapid Spaceback.

Roomster is based on Mk2 Fabia, though back end is slightly wider (recall is based on a Mk1 Octavia rear axle).

Happy hunting! And welcome to Briskoda.
