Hi all, I would like to know if anyone has fitted 205 60 16 or larger 205 65 16, 205 70 16, winter tyres to there Skoda Superb 4x4 estate 2012 or saloon car? I would like to fill the wheel arch without rubbing it and also smooth the ride aspect. 

Hi, welcome to the site. Inside the fuel flap you will find the Skoda approved sizes of wheels and tyres. If you want to fit other sizes I'm sure others will advise what may or may not be approriate.

Thanks Offski and Warmonkry for the advice and links, I'll be doing some studying, my main concern is the the four wheel drive system, I don't want to fit too large a tyre and then make it unserviceable, cheers.

205 55 R16 tyres (standard on the S models) have a lovely and smooth ride. Also extremely quiet on Michelin Crossclimates. I also have a spare set of rims with Continental TS850 winters on them. Think you can fit to all models except the v6

Thanks for that John, I've already got a spare set of rims for the car, it's the tyre size I'm after, I'm thinking of trying 205 60 16 or 205 65 16, the bigger the better, without rubbing the wheel arch.

The problem is then you are moving away from what the car has been originally designed/tested with - this can cause other issues (wheel calibration, type approval, legality , MOT, Insurance ) .

 

Also you need to make sure rubbing on wheel arch isn't an issue in ALL conditions. I had major problems with a kit car I built many years ago where the tyres rubbed the front wings when driving down a road with hairpin bends. 

 

I had a real shock when I was driven in a much higher model Superb II taxi (older with many miles on it though) as it was much noisier than my poverty spec 1.4tsi S model and that wasn't just the fact it had a diesel engine - road noise and ride was much worse. Saying that as well as size, tyre make can make a huge difference.

(1/3) the standard size for your car is 205/55/16 you know that and choosing a larger size will affect the stability, especially for your Superb. When I bought the new car I installed 205/55/16 Continental TS 830. Comparing with the summer 225/45/17 the behavior on highway was obvious just a little bit unstable especially over 100 km/h. Next set of tires installed were Continental TS 850, same size but tires had the XL feature (reinforced side wall). Now the car feel more stable, steering more precise and it is not a problem of suspension as you may think as my shocks (Sachs) were custom made for my car with 82 % efficiency. 

I believe that choosing  larger size you will sacrifice the vehicle dynamic stability related  with over steering as the tire flexibility increase with size ratio.  However larger sizes might absorb better the winter road road icy condition  with less noise inside the vehicle and you can add stability choosing XL characteristic.

2. Need to measure gap and the overall circumference and how ODO readings are influenced.

Interesting - my Crossclimates are XL although I can't remember the previous Summer Continentals being a problem re stability

 

 

 

BigJohn @ saying "problem" is a little bit too much, but the stability behavior difference  it is noticeable for sure from XL to non-XL if vehicle is in good condition, suspension, tire pressure, so on.
