How do you take off the cover to the battery?!!!

Featured Replies

Hi, Am having trouble with my power steering. I need to check the fluid in the system, which is apparently located underneath the battery. The problem I'm having is trying to remove the battery! After a helluva fight, I have managed to unclip the battery cover in the 3 places, but I'm unsure what to do with the relay/glow plug timer and connections at the front. Tried Google and YouTube but got nowhere. I don't want to force it/break it if it's not supposed to come apart! Can anyone help?

My car's a 2009 Fabia, 1.4 tdi greenline model. Many thanks to anyone who can help :-)

I have this model and to remove the battery, you loosen and remove both the plus (+) and neg (-) cables with a 10mm spanner and then a socket or tube spanner to loosen the clamp that sits in centre, front of the battery, at its floor level. The battery should then just lift out with a little wiggle, to clear the wiring, etc. There should be nothing else needed to remove the battery as all the plastics come up when you do this. They may have push clips but I think they just lift off.

After taking out the battery, the tray that it sits on has three bolts, holding it in place. Remove the nuts and it should lift off, exposing the power steering pump for all to see.

I think these nuts and the one holding the battery clamp are either 12 or 13mm. If using a socket set, you will find out easily enough.

The power steering fluid has a built in dipstick in its cap with both hot and cold levels. You need to unscrew it, clean it and place it back in the container but here, I think you do not re-tighten, just place it in and check the level. It may be low but be mindful not to overfill it and check the fluid you are using is a recommended grade.
