Replacement head unit

Featured Replies

I am considering a replacement head unit for my Mk 2 FL Octavia, currently has a Bolero

I really do not want to spend more than £200 max,. I would like DAB, and a reversing camera input.

I was looking at this as it has DAB built in rather than needing an add on box for it:-

But i really do not know much about car stereos these days. I keep hearing about android 8, being a "must have" but just how "bad" would the unit i have posted above be?

As long as i can use android auto for nav, i am more than happy.

If you have a Bolero you need this size, plug and play literally but does need a 20 quid add on DAB box, does everything else and more, if you get the one you listed you will need a new surround.

Cheers for this. However, by the time I have bought the additional DAB box, it's heading towards £300. Which is too rich for my tastes. :-).

Yes I understand that but the one you listed is the wrong size so you will end up forking out for a surround, also the one you listed is possibly WinCe which is crap tbh and the amount of wiring coming out the back looks an absolute nightmare,

I don't think you will get Android 8 with DAB included in the price range you are looking for.

I have an Android 6 exactly the same as I listed above but 2G/16GB in box with all accessories I could let you have delivered for £180, been in my car just over 12 months and has been faultless.

I am tempted. May I ask, how long does it take to boot up? Can you PM me some pictures of it maybe?

About 30 seconds to a minute, it takes longer sometimes as I have to reverse off my drive which cuts in the rear cam app but if I don't reverse about 30 seconds, I will get some pics.

So, does it need to be fully booted up to use reversing camera? Sorry if it's stupid question. Lol. I watched some you tube videos of Android 6 systems starting up on a fairly reasonable time, so does it depend on how many apps etc you have on it?

If you "root" it can the boot time be sped up at all?

No the reverse camera is instant it doesn't have to be booted fully.

I suppose the more apps then it will slow down but I have Youtube, Torque pro, IGO, Google, Spotify, plus a dashcam connected the phone via BT, 64GB SD Card for music and it seems to cope well including the Wifi signal and GPS it connects well.

I have never rooted anything Android but it can be done just beyond my knowledge.

You can also set the power off time to 5/10/15/30 mins etc so it doesn't cold boot if you nip the shop or petrol station etc, I have it set to 5 mins.

I assume it also displays the climate control stuff too? Does it do the "doors open" display stuff as well or does that still stay on the maxidot ?

Does it have built in Bluetooth too? For hands free phone calls etc?

Realistically I am not fussed about having YouTube on my car stereo. Lol.

Reversing camera, some sort of Nav, Bluetooth and DAB is all I am fussed with.

Yes climate, doors, shows on maxidot, will connect to wheel controls if you have them.

Yes it has BT for hands free and also music streaming, I have my Android phone auto connect to BT when I enter the car it also triggers my phone to turn on wireless hotspot using Macrodroid.

You can buy a cheap reverse camera for it, the Nav is free and built in running off GPS but you would have to buy the DAB box, the app is installed and you just connect a USB DAB box which are around 20 quid.

If i got a standard, aftermarket double din head unit, (i know i will need a different fascia surround) will i also need a some sort of CAN BUS adaptor to enable climate etc to display on screen?

Just exploring all options

Sorry @T2000 but £180 seems just bit steep for Android 6 and still having to buy a DAB+ box, no offence and thanks for the heads up though.
