Front caliper bottom bolt is loose, any thoughts?

Featured Replies

Hi

I'm a newcomer to this forum, so go gently on me ...

Today, I changed the front discs and pads of my 2012 Skoda Octavia Combi. I bought it as a used car and uptil now it had been serviced fully by Skoda approved workshops. Nevertheless, the screw holding the left hand side disc was missing, and the one on the right had a wrecked head, so I had to drill it out. No biggy, they're just there for your convenience when putting on the wheel.

What's worse is that the bottom bolt on the left front caliper had a wrecked inner and outer thread. I could pull it out, but there was no way to fasten it again. That leads me to two questions:

On a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is being home in bed and 10 is driving blind-folded with a cabine full of Ebola patients, how dangerous is it to make do without that bolt for a while? As far as I can figure out there are no major forces acting in a direction that would force the caliper to swing upwards.

And what can I do about it? Is there any easy way to fix the internal and external thread? And if so, where can I find information about thread pitch or count?

Hope you can help,

cheers/holger

Danger rating of about 20.

And you could in theory use a helicoil or similar. Is the thread in the hub or the carrier, damned if I can remember.

20 ... right, so basically driving down an erupting volcano while blindfolded etc.

The thread is in the hub. I would hate having to replace that, so I'll take a look at how helicoils work. Thanks a lot!

To be honest the front bearing is a bolt in hub so its not a great task to swap.

I'd be tempted given the importance of the fixing to get another one.

You can buy repair kits that consist of a new guide pin with larger thread complete with drill and tap. Just make sure you get the tap started straight or it will turn into a nightmare of a  job
