Change of oil at service

Featured Replies

My local Skoda dealer has changed management and when my car had its service the oil  used was Castrol Edge. I don't know what was used at the factory but I have had Shell Helix Ultra from the first service onwards. I feel that the car is not as quiet with the Castrol derivative and the clatter at cold start up is more vocal. Acceleration seems to make the engine noisier also. Perhaps the wax in my ears has shifted!

Factory oil to VW504/507 is what they are putting in for brand new engines that might go 9,400 to 18,500 miles with no oil change.

So obviously not crap.

Castrol or Quantum will be used by most Main Dealers doing servicing

and to VW504 / 507 so 5w 30 FS Long Life.   (Long life oil can be the cause of short lived TSI's IMO.)

So has your car still got Long Life oil & 5w 30LL oil and on Fixed or Variable servicing, or is there now in 5w 40 FS /VW502 for fixed servicing.

.............

Now the cars are leaving the factory with VW508/509 so 0w20 FS LL.     What they needed to get WLTP co2 g/km & MPG figures under test conditions...

I am on variable servicing but the dealer says that they use longlife oil for both fixed and variable services. The Helix Ultra was 0W 30W. Now, if Castrol Edge is used their longlife oil is 5W 30W LL. Anyhow the way I drive 3 in 1 oil would be enough protection.

There you go then, you have gone 0w 30 rather than 5w 30.

As well if doing fixed servicing with a TSI to go 5w 40 FS and have a engine that might last years longer..... IME.

I presume you have a camchain 1.2tsi CBZA or CBZB engine, made before 2012.

I like many others here will tell you, it is dangerous to maintain this engine on variable servicing. I would recommend the oil is changed at least every 9000 miles. Going over a year is dangerous too. The chain and tensioner is a poor design and often of low quality material and dirty oil leads to accelerated wear/chsin stretch which can kill your engine.

Keep an ear for rattles when starting/running which is a clue that all is not right.

I have had the car serviced at every 9400 which works out at 15 month intervals. That is how the computer computes when my oil changes are due. It is chain driven and the oil looks clean when I check it.

I would have them use 5w 40 FS to VW502 next time and an oil more suitable for the country you are driving in if that is the UK.

What they used really might well have you hearing a noisier engine.  Crap oil as i think of it even if it does meet the Spec of VW504 / 507

I will use my local independent next time and give him the Helix Ultra as I was happy with that

I was looking at the rally to Saigon with Noel Edmonds and Martin Kemp on BBC2. The MGB and Morris Minor made it with no engine breakdowns. They knew how to build engines then but the oils were not up to it 50 years ago

They are driving cars with engines that will have been hand built and blue printed,  and cars built for historic rallying and road trips,  just as they were building 50 years ago.  So not really a 50 year old car,  just a 50 year old design that 40 years ago could be a pita when I drove them,  without a bit of modding.

Happy with it but engine noisy.   Better happy owner, long lived engine imo.

My original quote said that the Castrol Edge is the noisier alternative which is 5W 30. The Shell Helix Ultra is 0W 30W but that appears the quieter option
