Jonezy's MK4 Golf 2.3 20v V5 170bhp

Before I begin massive thank you and credit given to @droppedit for selling me such a lovely example of a Golf.

Went to look at this V5 over the weekend from a fellow member. It was such a nice car I just had to have it and the engine noise is addicting to say the least. I love it.

2002 Golf 2.3 litre 20 valve V5 170bhp. It has been really well maintained, and I plan to keep it like this.

It's only done 91500 miles, which considering the age is really low. All the usual Golf bits with the addition of Bora Vents, W8 interior light and cruise control.

I managed to get 35mpg on my drive back from collecting it. Anyway enough waffling heres the beauty...

The engine noise from this thing is just incredible.

The only thing the car wants is either a bush on the passenger side or a top mount as there is a slight clunk over bumps and braking. Nothing major tho.

I will update the thread as and when i do bits to it. It will mostly be staying stock with a few OEM+ upgrades along the way. Hoping to find myself some reasonably priced -40mm shocks and springs.

So the plans for the V5 are;

4motion front rear splitters

-40mm lowering shocks springs

Fit my double din Bluetooth stereo

Possibly an exhaust (current one sounds great to be honest)

And just general maintenance.

Thanks, Jonezy

looks tidy and they do sound well. You not swapping the wheels and bits over from the old one pal?

It really is mate, I was quite  shocked at how well it's been looked after

Majority of the bits from the old car have gone already mate. This one will be more of a OEM+ look I think.

Not an exciting update, but a update nonetheless. Decided I'd had enough of not being able to connect my phone to the stereo for music. So went out and fit my Double Din Bluetooth stereo...

Need to have a play with the colour settings to try and get the blue to match the Climatronic colour better.

I will hopefully have some better updates after Christmas  whistle.gif

Thanks, Jonezy

Not much going on here, picked up some GAZ GHA fully adjustable coilovers pretty cheap. I was planning on fitting the coilovers over the weekend but ended up needing to look for new rear shocks. I have stripped one of the rear shocks down but I've got no idea what oil is needed and where to get the seals. One of the seals looks pretty dead which is most likely what was causing the shock to get stuck down. After emailing GAZ customer services they said they would service the rear shocks for £30 +VAT +Shipping each, which isnt to bad at all. Anyway here are the coilovers...

So instead of fitting the coilovers I decided to carry on with refurbishing my Brembos...

Mid strip down, all the pistons/seals/bleed nipples removed...

Started to sand them down...

Gave up with sanding as it was hard work getting in to the intricate places. Went and bought myself some NitroMors and despite the reviews it still works as good as it used to when it was stupdily strong. I think the people who have left bad reviews on it have expected it to work instantly and havent followed the instructions. Anyway here's 1 calliper with the paint stripped off with nitromors...

The red bungs are something I 3D Printed off to block the important holes.

Hopefully get the other calliper stripped and then it will be colour deciding time.

Thanks, Jonezy

Got a pair of these to do myself at some point. You’re making it look much easier than I expected

The Brembos aren't that bad to take apart to be honest. I used a air line with a piece of wood in the middle of the calliper to pop the pistons out they popped out straight away. All the pistons are in really good condition so I'm just going to get some new seals and hardware and all should be good.

Not a clue what colour to do them tho :D

Is there a trick to removing the piston without an airline?!? I’ve got an air compressor in storage that I can get my hands on, but it’s a bit of a ball ache :blush

I have no idea how to remove without an airline to be honest mate. It took me about 10 minutes to fully strip the caliper and 5 minutes of that was trying to find a piece of wood to fit haha.

I was very close to swapping the V5 for a really clean MK2 Golf Friday but he pulled out because insruance would have been to much for him. So I decided to get on with it and get the coilovers on. Not going as low as I was in the last Golf haha. The V5 also hit 93k the other day.

I never take pictures during jobs as Im always flithy. but here is some pictures of the Golf on coilovers finally.

And the alloys I managed to pick up for a steal. They where in a tired state, really badly kerbed. So sent them to be powder coated in a custom dark grey with bronze flip and loads of metallic. They've come out amazing.

Had 5 minutes spare yesterday so got my Gloss Black switch panel trim put in. Looks so much better than the brushed one. Just need to find the other 3 handles to do and it will look loads better. I've also got gloss black stereo surround, ash tray cover etc. to fit and gloss black door pulls to fit, I can't stand the chrome.

It isn't the best paint job but looks loads better. I'm going to flat my spare brushed one down and try get a better finish.

Also bought this to fit since the rear wash doesnt work:

I haven't posted in here for a while.

Had its MOT on Saturday and it passed with flying colours, also managed to get time to put it on the ramp at my uncles garage to fit my bits.

Finally got round to fitting my fully refurbed front hub knuckles with brand new bearings, dust shields, sensors, full works, brand new wishbones with new poly bushes, brand new coilovers and top mounts all round, track rods inner and outer and also got the tracking done. Drives so smooth and solid now, I've fallen back in love with the beast. Unfortunately I didnt get any pictures whilst doing all the bits. And what a ballache doing the drivers side wishbone is, top mount bolts had to be removed and the engine jack up just to remove the front wishbone bolt. Stupid design.

Since the car was now mechinclly sound and flew through the MOT i decided to finally get my Skoda Fabia Monte Carlo red stitch steering wheel fit and my old Hella headlights (thanks to Glendil)

Next on the list is centre silencer and back box delete

Been doing overtime every night and weekend for the run up to Christmas so haven't had much time. Car still hasn't been washed but I have done the centre silencer delete and put a stainless steel back box on. Straight through was far to loud for me. Hopefully the video below shows you how it sounds now. Car will be getting more done next week and a good wash because I've booked a few weeks off work over Christmas.

I've also bought a brand new Neuspeed Cold Air Intake to go on just waiting for a reducer silicone hose for it. All for the massive price of £70.

Still playing with the idea of sticking a turbo on with low boost, reading online says it should see around 250HP on low boost. That will be next year tho. Just got myself a 125cc motorbike to get myself to work and back so I can do jobs on the V5 without needing to rush to get it finished.

Cheers, Adam

It's been a while since I posted in this thread.

Not much has changed other than new wheels. Genuine Porsche 987 alloys, 18x8 & 18x9 had them painted in a custom Porsche grey with loads of red flake so the colour changes drastically in the sun.

So here's a few pictures to spam you with...
