Guide - How to disable the seat belt warning on an Octavia MK1

Featured Replies

Many owners find the "bing-bong" seat belt reminder very annoying and wish to disable it.

Whilst it is possible to disable the warning light using VAG-COM software it is not possible to simply turn of the noise.

WARNING: It is not known if the following procedure will effect the performance of secondary restraint systems and airbags in the event of an accident. Never drive without a seatbelt except in circumstances permitted by the law.

1) Raise the seat to its maximum height, following the instructions in the owners' hand book

2) Open the rear door of the vehicle and look under the front seat from the rear footwell.

3) You will see a cable loom going under the seat and connecting to the base of the seat belt harness.

4) Disconnect the loom

5) The warning chime should now be disabled.

Hi,

Is this just for the Mk1? also is it knon yet if it has any adverse effects on the other safety features? Would love to stop the Boing! Cheers.

There is a safer way:

1. Open door

2. Get in and sit down.

3. Put seatbelt on.

4. Key in ignition and switch on

No annoying bonks :D

I know mate, its just that when I get in I usually turn on the ignition before I put the belt on, gives it a few seconds to settle. ;)

In a recent accident involving the Octavia of a Briskoda member, the passenger seat was empty yet both airbags went off. This could indicate that airbags are deployed regardless of seatbelt status.

I get the bongs, but have got used to ignoring them.

It's habbit, get in car turn ignition, put seat belt on while waiting for glow plugs (used to be 15 seconds on some cars) then stat

Here's something I stuck in another thread, but it seems to fit best here...

I found it much easier to do from the driver's footwell (rather than the rear), with the seat pushed back a bit.

To give you an idea of where it's located, you can see the handbrake top right of the photo (sorry about my light being in the way confusing things). The clip is pretty much in a direct line with there the light is pointing, fixed to the underside of the seat.

The assembly is fixed under the drivers seat. Red arrow points to a clip that you can spring up allowing you to slide the assembly off and get a bit more room to play with.

Once that's off, there is another spring clip holding the two components together. I pulled this back with my fingernail while tugging on the left hand side of the assembly (pulling it from right to left of the photo). Once the cable is pulled tight it comes apart easily.

Success! No more bonging! I fitted the larger clip (bottom one) back under the seat to stop it waggling about.

Dosent that power the seat airbag and belt tensioners in the event of an impact?

Apparently not, the explanations makes a lot of sense too...

Airbags seem to inflate using sensors independent to the seat belt too: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airbag

I'm off to yank my seatbelt and see if it jams on itself :wonder: Pretty sure there is some kind of device built into the mechanism that is completely separate from the sensor in the buckle...

Seats have airbags in them which will only activate if the seat is occuppied.

And as for the seatbelts, I was refering to the buckle part which in the event of a crash is pulled down to the floor of the car by way of an explosive charge emoticon-0105-wink.gif

why would you want to play about with something that only lasts acouple of seconds . its not that bad

I don't get what the problem is with the bongs... Be grateful you don't drive a peugeot, they never shut up.

I'm pretty bored of the chimes too, if i plug the clip back in will it start doing the bongs again does anyone know?

Isnt this now an MOT failure if it doesnt chime?

Brilliant post AdamR - thank you!

Our seat belt alarm started going off even when the belt was plugged in - worse for me, as a small person who has the seat as far forward as possible, than for someone with long legs. Did one 60 mile journey with an almost continuous bleeping!

The photos really helped.
