Rattling noise when ticking over

Featured Replies

Hi all

I own a 2012 monte carlo 1.2 tsi 17.000 miles ..when the car is driving there is no rattling noise ..only when i stop and car is ticking over ..this annoying rattling noise starts any ideas ??? ..i purchased the car end of november from a skoda dealership

Thanks Mike

Take it back to the dealer and tell them you believe the timing chain is rattling. A serious and common issue with this engine, that is well known, even by Skoda, VAG and the entire dealer network. Could be a stretched chain, faulty tensioner, or incorrectly fitted oil filter with one too many sealing rings left in at the last service giving low oil pressure at idle. Tell them to sort it or you will reject on the the grounds it shows symptoms that are likely to be terminal.

Ask for full details of tests, findings and what was done to rectify it, and ask for a 2 year unlimited parts and labour warranty on timing chain/sprocket/tensioner, for piece of mind.

Or just reject it.

Quick update on the rattling noise i was hearing

Returned car to dealer it turned out to be the fuel line that runs underneath the car ..some of the protective foam had come off and the fuel line was tapping against the body of the car when running idle ..more foam applied and quiet as a mouse again now ...happy Monte owner again

Something so small can be amplified within the car. I had a similar problem on old car where the handbrake cable tapped against a suspension arm. Sounded really loud in the car and expected major suspension component to have failed. Turned out a zip tie was all that was required.
