Won't go into 1st, 3rd or 5th

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Driving home today and my car (Superb 2013 1.6 Greenline) wouldn't go into 3rd.... I then realised it wouldn't go into 1st or 5th either.. I pulled over and switched the engine off and it selected gears fine. I started it up again and it selected gears fine!

Just took it for another drive and it was fine. What the hell!

It's probably due a clutch and flywheel as it's on 140k and can't recall it ever being done.

What do you guys think? Any help would be great!

Thanks

1st, 3rd and 5th sounds like a linkage problem or a engine/gearbox mount. All those (1,3,5) are at the top of the gear selection. Get someone to rock the engine backwards and forwards (front to rear of the car) and examine mounts up top and down below.

If it was clutch it would initially cause issues with 1st and reverse.

That's a great shout on the engine mounts! I'll give it a look tomorrow. Hoping i dont have to pull the box out just yet.

That’s very odd indeed.

The 1.6d has a solid flywheel - not the dual mass flywheel (DMF) that causes trouble. I wouldn't assume the cost of a flywheel is required as its likely it never needed to be done....

If bad in manual gears 1,3,5 but OK in 2 & 4 then I really don't think it's the clutch or SMF
