'speed's, and chains

Featured Replies

I've been given a road bike by a friend for looking after his dog whilst they went away for his birthday.

Anyway, the chain was seized so i put my old/used KMC SILVER X9 speed one on to see if it would be fine with the 8 speed Shimano cassette.

It has worked faultlessly, very smooth and quiet. (unfortunately tho the chain needs replacing as is old and very used).

I have purchased a new Taya Octo 7/8 speed chain (lovely looking Silver one) supposed to be a good quality chain, but this seems to be rubbing on the sides of the cassette a bit. It may? make a good 7 speed chain, but not an 8 speed imo.

I am yet to purchase a new cassette (probably get Shimano Sora as same replacement) but i am thinking that a 9 speed chain may be a better option, rather than an eight???

I will also look at 8 speed Shimano HG chains to see if these are narrower / the KMC X9 is almost 1mm narrower than the Taya. (yes, i do understand why they should be a little narrower).

Any thoughts / similar experiences???

I like Silver/Silver chains. KMC X? Silver's are my favourite (actually prefer the basic one ie non 'light / superlight). Merlin cycles show the pic but it is the 'light' one as stated.

@Tilt - This sounds like you're running too wide a chain.
