Weird indicator behaviour - indicator lights stay lit (don't flash)

Featured Replies

Hi,

I just has some weird behaviour from the indicators that I can't find any info on elsewhere in the forums.

With the indicators on:

  • the "relay" double-time clicked (as if a bulb has gone)
  • the "bulb issue" dash warning light illuminated
  • the main indicator lights flashed a couple of times and then stayed illuminated
  • the mirror repeater indicators flashed normally

No bulbs had blown. The correct indicators illuminated for the direction being indicated.

Any ideas?  Thanks in advance!

It does sound a bit strange. Have you done anything to the car recently that may have caused a problem such as changing anything electrical?

Have you fitted any LED bulbs or HID ones to the car?

You may need to find a member local to you with VCDS who can scan your car to see what the actual fault codes are.

Thanks for your reply. We've just bought the car and don't really know its history that well. The problem corrected itself after an hour or so. I'll hopefully be meeting someone with a VCDS soon, so as you say, maybe something will show then.

Do you have a towbar electrics socket on the back?

If it is a plug-in tow hitch then the socket will be hinged and out of sight behind the rear bumper.

There's no towbar stuff visible from the outside. I'll have a look behind the bumper this evening.

I had a similar random hissy fit problem, it did not go away, acting on intuition I forceably and repeatedly actioned the indicator control like a hamfisted oaf on speed, almost to the point of breaking it in the hope that it might have been a dirty contact and I could clean it up this way as I was away from home and needed to continue the journey.

It worked and has not happened again since, a later VCDS scan revealed nothing, no error codes.

I have a similar occasional problem with the cruise control not working, I have previously removed it and cleaned the contacts and the carbon resistor surface, on the road I give it the good news like the indicator and it starts working, in this case VCDS does show an intermittent implausible readings fault code for the switch.

Check also for water in the passenger side cubby holes in the boot where the wiring goes to the rear lights.

I had similar with mine, try disconnecting the battery for half an hour and see if everything returns to normal after reconnection

Update:

Checked for towbar electrics socket, but doesn't have one.

Checked for water in the boot side cubby holes, but all looked dry.

Will check for errors in VCDS when I can find someone to help with that.

If it happens again, I'll try mashing the indicator stalk and disconnecting the battery  :)

Hopefully, it was just having a hissy fit over being sold to a new owner, and we'll not see any further tantrums. Fingers crossed.

Thanks all for your help!

If it was undriven for any significant length of time while being sold then dirty contacts are a likely possibility, its what I put my problems down to as it was happening as soon as I started driving it and after giving it the good news I have driven 10K miles with no recurrence.
