Solid flywheel conversion

Featured Replies

I have just changed the clutch on my 2006 1.9PD BXE engined Octavia. The flywheel has been knocking for some time at idle and it had developed a strange noise when under load pulling away.

After reading the many posts on here regarding solid conversions verses DMF i decided (partly due to cost) to replace for a solid kit. Two  versions available, a transmech or verto with £100 difference in price.

I decided to go with the Verto kit as posts on here had said the cheaper transmech kit tended to suffer from noises?. Ordered the kit from Euro car parts and it all looked pretty comprehensive including the bolts for the flywheel and pressure plate.

Did the job at work as we have a two poster lift to make things a bit easier. all went well apart from when the clutch came out the flywheel had moved due to wear and covered the holes for the flywheel bolts making it impossible to remove them. set about it with the angle grinder to relieve the centre section of the old flywheel to allow access to the bolts. got the new flywheel in and torqued up, new clutch and pressure plate on ( there was a picture in the kit stating the pressure plate had to be correctly aligned to the flywheel) refit the box and connected everything back up and i now have a noise free clutch. First impressions are good there are no strange noises which is now strange! there is no judder on take up and the car pulls away with no noise. The only slight criticism i have and it is slight, is the clutch pedal is just a tad heavier than it was before. The clutch pedal on this car was so light it was a joy to use. The old clutch that came out had very little wear and to be honest would have gone back in if i was just replacing the DMF. So if you are thinking of putting a Solid kit in i would say absolutely go for a solid kit.

Sorry no pics!!!!

I had mine replaced with a solid flywheel combo 90K miles ago, back in 2012, and apart from the slightly heavier pedal, it is very smooth and progressive. If my Alfa GT clutch gets a bit marginal I may replace that with the solid flywheel alternative.

update on this thread. I have now sold the car and from doing the clutch to selling it the clutch behaved faultlessly. again anyone contemplating changing to a solid flywheel set up, do not hesitate. The DMF is an expensive replacement if you are paying for it. I appreciate most people will have to pay someone to replace their clutch and the cost difference makes it a bit easier on the pocket
