VRS newbie advice

Featured Replies

Hi,

Im sure the topic has been brought up many times but i couldnt find a specific answer scrolling through the many threads.

Im looking to purchase a late 2010 60 Fabia VRS, its at around 50k with a 'rebuild' carried out around 2k miles ago.

My question is, i know the CAVE engine appears to be the one not to have, however if the engine has been rebuilt will this have sorted the engine issues for good or is it just likely to be putting off the inevitable?

I have no details currently on the rebuild, ie who carried it out, whats been replaced etc as they number on the advert went to voicemail.

Any help/advice is much appreciated

sound like could be an 'oil burner' then owner has had some fixes then traded unless it is a timing chain rebuild. (latter being the worse of the 2)

plenty of folk trading these in 'with the main issues they were born with' and the garage are none the wiser. You need more info really

So its a private sale, just spoke to the seller, he doesnt claim to be much of a mechanic but from what i can gsther cylinder number 1 lost compression which is what prompted the rebuild, however there could be more to the story

The engine rebuild has then been carried out at a local workshop, he says he has an invoice of £1800 for the work carried out.

From what he says and without seeing the breakdown of the invoice it sounds like a straight oem spec rebuild so my concern is with no mods/updates will this engine just go pop again with the same issue?

In other words what im getting at is by rebuilding this particular CAVE engine, will the underlying issues go away? Or should i be looking for a later spec CTHE engine/car in your opinion?

Welcome.

A member here was getting new pistons to rebuild his engine.

http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/466202-cave-14-twincharger-piston-help

There were lots of 2010/11 rebuilt before Skoda / VW / SEAT / Audi started using short units and then base units.

They can be going strong 6 or 7 years later.

Rebuilding a 8 year old engine is different depending on miles covered.

You need to check if it is even the original engine that is being rebuilt as replacements have been replaced, and even cars on 3rd or 4th engines around.

A rebuild can be fine if done by someone with the gear and an idea and skills.

You need to speak with where the work was done.

They know what pistons / rings / scrapers were used, how the head / valves were and were there updated oil spray jets fitted,

or what was done.

Then there is the DSG and has it had 'Service Campaign' 34F7 done, and when.

Has the water pump been replaced, new belts on at the rebuild etc.

Is the car a real bargain?

From what the seller said, there was no mention of uprated oil spray jets or any upgrades.

Im guessing a rebuild consisting of pistons, rings etc. However the spec/standard of the rebuild is to be confirmed later when he sends me the invoice/spec sheet as he says it was carried out at a local garage not main dealer or specialist. I believe it is the original engine still.

What is the service campaign regarding the DSG box??

Also are there any companys/individuals that specialise in these engines?

If so is there an upgrade package or something along those lines to improve the engine reliability?

There is a pinned thread at the top of the section on the DQ200 DSG Service Campaign.

Started from early 2014 to change the synthetic oil to mineral and a software update.

If done there should be a sticker in the spare tyre well showing. A main dealer can check or Skoda UK Customer services.

Or might show here if needed and outstanding.

Brilliant thanks for the advice i will ask and check!

Also regarding is the car a bargain, im looking to purchase at around £4500.

Seems cheap to me but its appearing to feel like quite a big gamble to more i look into it.

They are all a gamble which is why some are 'much cheapness'.  Does not mean not wort buying.  You just need to do research.

?

Do you want to post the reg number as maybe the car is known here.

Me and a few other members had the first cars in the UK, and while i had a 10 plate another member here had a 60 plate built before mine.

Some were press cars.

Not all CAVE's need the uprated oil spray jets / breather pipe unless burning a lot of oil, which i am presuming the seller hasnt said,

Untreated oil burners would likely lead to cylinder problems though....

Breather pipe was the 1st attempt t a fix then it was incorporated in with the Oil Jets being uprated, the breather pipe is the only visual sign something has been attempted in the past.

Reading this guide below is enough to put anyone off, most of us discovered long after buying.

So turns out the cause for rebuild was:

*) The vehicle was missfiring

*) A compression test identified a loss of compression on cylinder number 2

*) They found 2 exhaust valves burnt out

*) They overhauled the head & replaced the exhaust valves & guides

Parts replaced on invoice:

Oil filter

Timing chain kit

Head set

Head bolts

Timing case cover gasket

5W-30 oil

Bosch ignition coil x4

Bosch spark plug x4

So should i be concerned? has the seller papered over the cracks?

Or is this good news with this type of engine?
