Timing Chain Related Failures

Featured Replies

Over some years I have visited this forum several times and would like to thank the many contributors whose views, tips and suggestions have proved to be a truly great resource.

Many times I have thought about contributing but often found that what I was going to write had already been said by someone else and I didn't want to waste everyone's time just repeating stuff for no reason.

I now find myself in a position that may be familiar to some, namely I own a 1.8 TSI engined Skoda built between 2008 and 2015 that has done less than 75,000 miles with a timing chain/timing chain tensioner that has failed, leaving me facing a costs that could run to over £6,500.

Like many before me I feel it unreasonable that I should pay for something that I discover is due to what appears to be a known failure of design or manufacture and take great exception to being dismissed out of hand by Skoda UK in a way that I suspect would give every owner of a Skoda over three years old cause to shudder. Their automated email response that "Your satisfaction is important to us" currently rings very hollow.

I could vent my anger in a long diatribe but I'm convinced this would not achieve very much except a few comments, some sympathetic (always welcomed) and some expressing the view that it's just tough luck (understandable if you've never been impacted in this way). Well I have been, twice, the first time being a Golf VR6.

As a result I have decided to be proactive. So, in connection with this I would like to find out just how common this timing chain/chain tensioner issue really is this side of the Atlantic, as it would seem that it is already the subject of a successful class action in the US.

To this end I am looking for responses from anyone who has had an Audi, VW, Seat or Skoda with a TSI engine that has experienced a failure of the timing chain/timing chain tensioner. It would be helpful to know the following:

Contact details:
Vehicle Make:
Model:
Year of manufacture:
Engine capacity:
Age at time of failure:
Mileage at time of failure:
Customer services case number, if known:

Please note that I do not have any connection to any vehicle manufacturers and have opened the account below for the purpose of getting responses.

Please send responses to:
