OSF Disc Getting Hot. AGAIN!!

In November 2017 I had to replace the OSF and R calipers as they were binding, the front was sticking on, the rear was only doing it occsonally.  All four brake pads and discs were replaced at the same time.  This seemed to cure the problem, however, the vast majority of my journeys are only about 3 miles or so each way, with the occasional 20 mile excursion to Glasgow, my annual mileage is approximately 8k. 

 

In March 2018 during a fairly long journey of approximately 86 miles I began to feel there was an issue with the brakes, sure enough once we got to our destination, the OSF disc was extremely hot.  Once back home, local Skoda dealer stripped the brakes down and regreased whatever needed greasing and all was fine again. 

 

That was the case until a few weeks ago, when occasionally I get a sqealing noise from the OSF wheel under braking, and the disc is hot to touch.  It doesn't happen every journey, and it can occur early in the journey, but not necessarily towards the end, especially if there has been a short break in the journey.  My prime suspect would be the calipre again, but reading a few threads on here some people have mentioned the hub can be an issue on the MKII Octavia.  Visually the OSF hub does appear to be in poor state, in that you can actually rub the rust off it. 

 

The vehicle is approaching 105k, is 9 years old with FSSH and recently passed its MoT with only minor advisories for slight cracking on the sidewalls of the OSR and NSR tyres.

My first guess would be a poor job from the mechanics that worked on the brakes. It is very easy to "forget" doing a few minor operations during a brake job so the client will come back again soon for another unneeded brake job. Those minor operations are:

  • checking the caliper sliding pins for rust and binding
  • check the rubber boots of the caliper sliding pins for integrity
  • check there is enough silicon grease inside rubber boots of the caliper sliding pins
  • grease with copper grease the back of the brake pads and the sliding points of the brake pads

Other than that I'd say there might be an issue with your short routes and your driving style. Your car is an unhappy car because it is made for longer rides outside town. Slow speed and frequent braking are killing the car.

I wonder how all the thousands of Octavias used as taxis, by the Police and ambulance srevices cope in all that stop-start traffic...

This topic is not about coping. I am well aware of your "stretch to the extreme to prove a meager point" technique. Please keep it for Brexit. If you have something constructive to say that could help the OP then be my guest.

They are all abused cars. Octavias are not cars for heavy city traffic. They feel best on long routes on highways.

Get the brakes hot to the point they are squeaking. Raise the vehicle and rotate the wheel. If it’s binding crack the bleed screw. If the wheel frees up its hydraulic. If it still sticks it’s mechanical. Strip the brake down and inspect. 

Incorrect lube on the sliding pins can affect the rubbers.....making them stick to the pins.....

 

I used copper grease firstly as I had nothing else to hand, and had similar issue to yours........trouble, only a short while after stripping (the caliper that is) and cleaning it all.

 

Got myself some Mintex Ceratec and re-did the caliper and cleaned all the copper grease off of the pins etc...............been fine since.

 

And I wouldn't put it past mechanics using copper grease.........probably whatever is closest to hand.........
