just a quickie 17 plate superb 2.0 diesel changeing the fuel filter is it just unscrew the bolts and replace it do you have to prime it or just drop it it also would you suggest skoda filter or aftermarket one thnaks

You just need to unscew the cap, change the filter and put the cap back in place.

Just mind screwing "in cross" the bolts. Chose the 1st screw and then screw using a 1-3-5-2-4 sequence with only few screwdriver turns on each screw. Then repeat until the cap gets in touch with the filter housing. Final torque is 5+/- 1 Nm. It's written on the cap.

Then, you need to prime the LP Booster Pump using the contact key (or start/stop knob if you've got kessy) :

1) Switch contact on (without starting the engine)

2) Wait for ~10s so that pressure is set in the common rail.

3) Switch off

4) Wait for ~15s to let the pressure fall down

5) Come back to step 1) and repeat 5-6 times the complete cycle.

 

Then you can start the engine and should not notice any trouble in engine revs. It shoud be steady.

If it stalls, repeat the complete prime process. You can also help getting rid of potential remaining air in fuel manifolds by pressing throttle to reach ~2000 rpm for ~1mn.

Note, I never noticed any "hick up" in engine revs while accelerating this way. Thus I guess it"s more about reasssuring myself than really necessaray... Anyway, it doesn't really hurt... 

I know that a priming process using VCDS, also exists. But it doesn't make you saving time. I've changed the fuel filters on TDI engines about 6-7 times on 4 different VAG cars. I never had problem using the contact key process.

 

Additional information:

You need Torx 120  to remove the 5 screws, but watch out, they're really tiny and could easly fall down into the engine compartment.

The filter reference is 5QO 127 177 (No Index until 2/6th/2017 - Index B from 2/6th/2017 to 3/11th/2019 - Index D from 3/11th/2019  )

 

Dealing with the fuel filter choice, you can use many brands. I'm satisfied with Bosch, Valeo, Mann or Purflux filters. But I guess others should do the job as well.

Note, I change my filter every 45000 km (28000 miles) instead of the recommended 90000 (56000). Filters are already pretty dark after 45000...

I’ve a 2015 mark III Superb. When using part finder websites I get two options for the diesel fuel filter 102mm and 147mm even when I enter my registration number. Any ideas 

A tape measure?  One is 1 1/2 times the size of the other.🙂

I’d prefer to have the part in hand rather than having to open the filter twice 

 @Trunkmonkey Lucky you! I've just change my diesel fuel filter yesterday.

Actually, the original fuel filter is ~110 mm high, whereas the new one (UFI brand) is ~155 mm. Fortunately, it fits into the fuel filter housing. No particular issue to reinstall the fuel filter cover.

I was also fuzzed, when I removed the original one... 🤔
