Fabia 1.4 TDI 80 Lost power then stopped

Featured Replies

Hi all, i have searched forum but could not find a solution to problem. When driving home while towing a motorbike, going uphill car appeared to loose power and when we got back to level going in top gear car lost all power and we coasted onto verge. Car had half a tank of fuel and tried to start but to no avail, left a good half an hour and tried again and still no joy. Wife to the rescue and we recovered bike and returned with 20l fuel and topped up. Hey presto car fires into life and drives home faultlessly. So initially i thought there was something wrong with pump pickup in tank, but removed flow pipe at tank and got lift pump to pump fuel out of tank and retrieved 35l approx. Removed pump and checked pump and tank for dirt but all was pretty good and have refitted and car running. The only other thing i thought it could be other than an intermittent fuel pump is tank breather blockage and its only become apparent as its the first time towing any distance and the extra fuel consumption has highlighted the problem. When cap was removed it showed no suction but this was almost 4 hrs after breaking down. Can anyone help as although its running at the mo i do not feel i have found the problem. PS apparently last week after switching off car as there was a long wait at roadworks with car facing downhill it struggled to restart requiring a good 20+ seconds of cranking before starting. Tow bar new aswell

Fuel pressure check from the lift pump and tandem pump I think.

Thanks Tech1e, understand where your coming from but as its running at the moment without issue im not sure anything would be abnormal, and if rail was low pressure i would guess this would trigger EML!!!

The PD doesn't have a fuel pressure sensor (or a fuel rail) so it won't trigger an EML.

I chased a lack of power problem on a 1.4 PD for ages until I found the rubber supply pipe to the tandem pump had gone soft. When the engine got hot the pipe folded in on itself and blocked the fuel supply to the pump. No EML, no faults, just felt like the engine was being retarded.
