Engine noise

Featured Replies

Hi, I’ve just bought a ‘17’ plate Octavia estate 1.6tdi from a main dealer.  Everything about it is spot on except it is noisy.  It has an engine drone that invades  the cabin, it’s noticeable when the tyre and other noises don’t drown it out.  If I put my clutch in it stops.  Could that mean its in the drive train, rather than the engine?  I also have a noise that is like a rasping exhaust resonance between 2500 and 3000, heard whilst revving in second gear.  It sounds like a tuned car!

Dealer said first engine noise was normal, but acknowledged the second resonance type noise wasn’t.  They looked at it for an hour without finding anything and asked me if I was willing to stand the cost of more diagnostic work at £85 plus vat per hr!  I declined said I didn’t want to fund their incompetence.  I normally run cheap cars and fix them myself.  I thought that a warrantee  would sort out such issues.

I’m going to have a look myself with a friend to help.  Any ideas, also I’m in Cumbria, anyone know a competent friendly dealer, other than in Carlisle?
