Skoda Gear Selection Problem

Featured Replies

Recently picked up my Skoda secondhand from a car dealer and it has started to become difficult to select a gear.It doesnt always happen as its easy to select a gear most of the time.Im finding it hard to balance the car on a hill could this be the start of a clutch problems.

Any advice would be great.

Symptom of a failing dual mass flywheel.

Solution is to change the dmf and clutch at the same time.

Thank you pikpilot i thought this may well be symptoms of a failing dmf hopefully the dealer i bought the car from will sort it as i have only had the car 6 days.

Hi vrs09,

80% confidence that its the DMF. Just had mine looked at - on start up, lay an ear to the right side of the engine, if it's coming from there it's most likely DMF. As pikpilot said, do clutch and DMF at the same time.

All the best

Pretty much.

Within first 30 days you are entitled to reject the car if not as described, not fit for purpose, not satisfactory quality.

Difficulty changing gear, starting on a hill due to failing clutch are likely to render it unfit for purpose.

Care should be taken if you did choose to accept a repair because you really want the vehicle  that a) it is done properly and completely and b) it doesn't push you outside 30 day period in which to reject.

Did the dealer put in a new dual mass flywheel at the same time as the clutch?

No new dmf fitted and thats exactly what im thinking so gonna give him a call monday.Surely they would have noticed that the dmf is getting worn.

|spoke to the dealer today and he said that the clutch cost him £600 so i presume he put in a new dmf.

He said try slipping the clutch to clean of any contamination. ?

I think he just pulled a number out the air to impress you.

Perhaps someone who has replaced a clutch recently can join the conversation.

If the clutch problem is fixed by replacement and there is no rattling or other signs of a failed or failing dmf, that is all the dealer would be expected to do. If you were worried about the extent of any repair you should of rejected. But if you are happy and everything is as you would expect then there is nothing more to do here. It is too late to ask to see, inspect the dmf now the clutch has been removed and replaced....

Im not happy with the repair thats why im asking about the dmf if it would cause the clutch judder if it has not been replaced as i only have the dealers word to go by.

He has said to contact him tomorrow after he has spoke to his mechanic.

Well all i can say is my clutch has sorted itself out....maybe it needed bedding in as now its fine with no juddering. So im a happy octavia owner.
