Burning oil smell

Featured Replies

Hi all ,

I have a 2010 octavia 1.6 diesel. When starting it up i get a burning oil smell and when I looked at it , it was coming from the back of the engine . Any ideas as to what the problem is.  There is 61000 miles on it and car is in good order . Appreciate any feedback.

Exhaust manifold leak?

Is there any smoke out the exhaust on startup?

Hi chrisund123

No smoke out exhaust.  Lifted of engine cover and there is black soot type colouration on parts at the back of engine. Can't see any obvious signs.

Thanks for your reply.

I'm only suggesting this as the failed component is located at the rear of the engine.

I had an occasional strong 'gassy' oily smell (similar to the smell you get during a regen) and a slight hissing sound that would come into the cabin for nearly two years that was eventually traced to a failed EGR Cooler.
