Hi guys, I have been silently using the forum for a good while now, almost always the sticky posts cover most of the issues and have been off great help. 

 

I have been having the background judder for a while although it has been a minor background annoyance. Today  however my 1.9tdi superb estate (145k miles with full service) decided to go a step further. The judder is now a full shake at Idle (needle not moving) I legged the bonnet to see the engine bouncing around quite severely, I know people go through a range of fixes trying to work this one out but given how much the engine is moving could it be possible the mounts have failed? If I push down (quite hard) on the engine the problem stops. 

 

Any thoughts on this much appreciated. 

I'd start by looking at engine mounts. If it's visibly moving around a lot, then it's certainly likely that a mount (or a bolt holding a mount) has failed. IIRC one of the mounts has to be removed to change the timing belt, and requires new bolts to be fitted when it's reattached. If the timing belt has been done and the old bolts reused, they can snap.

I had the belt replaced by the local dealership about 2 years ago. We have hit a few big pot holes recently, maybe a shock load had contributed to it.

 

I have a 55 year old landy... The engine currently moves less on that than the superb. I would say its significant movement on the actual engine. 

 

I'm okay at the most bits (not such a fan of modern electrics) are the mounts easily accessible and replaceable in your opinion? I don't have access to a pit or highlift at the moment though.

I'm looking at the service manual for the 2.0 CR engine (it shouldn't be too different for the 1.9), there's a mount at each side of the engine bay (one each end of the engine) to carry the weight of the engine/gearbox, plus a third mount at the back of the engine bay to stop the engine rocking. You need to be able to support the engine while changing/adjusting the mounts and it looks like you need to get underneath too.

Likely to be the top mountin front of the timing belt and visible with the engine cover lifted off, on my engine the bolt had I suspect loosened and the boss broken on the alloy casting, the mounts themselves are quite bulletproof.

I will go and have a look at this and see if I can see any obvious mounts.

I have had a look and it appears the visible mounts are okay. I have noticed that the symptoms are worse/better depending on engine temp, so I guess I am going to have to go down the same route as others with glow plugs etc.

The 1.9 can suffer with failure of the  of pd injector wiring loom as it sits in hot oil , cheap to fix though.

 

Glow plugs only used when first starting from cold

Thanks I will have a look up on this, I believe it was a cheap fix but can be a bit awkward to do? If it was to work thought would be worthwhile!
