Intermittent Rear Wiper Issue

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I’ve  encountered an issue with the rear wiper on our 2011 scout.

Last Thursday the rear wipe wouldn’t work. (The rear wash would).

As we haven’t  had the car long I put this down to me not switching it on properly.

on Saturday it worked fine, but on Sunday it stopped working again. My partner drove the car today and reported it was working?!?

ive read about the motor failing but don’t think this is the issue.

I’ve  also read about a micro switch issue, is this in the tail gate lock?

I returned to the car to collect something Tuesday night and found the boot space light on with the boot shut🤨

Im wondering if this points to a switch or wiring issue???

Any ideas???

Thanks in advance

The estate is not the same wiper motor as the hatch so is not prone to water damage if you do happen to read other threads..

It is supposed to stop when the rear tail gate is open, so it sounds likely your rear tailgate light switch is not operating correctly.

That said, my tailgate wiper motor has started to be a bit intermittent.  In my case, it is not related to the tail gate being open. I can restart it by moving the arm a little. I've had it out and cleaned the motor commutator and brushes with electrical cleaner as well as moved the brushes back and forth (there was heaps of meat on them) and it worked first time , after putting it all back together, but has since stalled once or twice again.....

There is a microswitch in the lock mechanism, if the boot light is on with the boot shut then the car thinks the boot is open.

As mentioned above, the operation of the rear wiper is interrupted if the boot is open, this is deliberate.

The rear wiper motors on the MkII Octavia, in both estate and hatchback are notoriously weak, even without the infamous water ingress issue.
