Just been to fill the tank up, and the petrol cap just spins around freely, it won't actually open.

Any suggestions?.

Is it a locking cap with the Key in, and have you tried pressing down and turning the cap at the same time?

 

If you say if a Mk1, 2 or 3 a mod can maybe move your post.

I have tried pressing and turning, like a childproof lock, it still won't open.

Yep, pressing and turning anti clockwise.
