Clunking sound from first to second gear.

Featured Replies

Hello!

Octavia MkII, Scout, 2012

6 gear manual gearbox.

2.0 TDI

I have a clunking sound when I shift from first to second gear.

It will occur most of the time after I have pressed down the clutch and I can avoid it sometimes by going faster and a bit longer on the first gear.

At times there are a minor clunking sound when going from second to third gear.

There are never any sound when shifting gears above the third gear.

Riding through bumps do not make a sound.

From what I have gathered here and on some other sites it may be due to a motor or gearbox mount being worn out.

I do not have any problem shifting gear and the gear stick do not move when accelerating.

But the sound is not so apparently coming from the front when I am listening it may very well be coming from the rear.

And when searching about that it also may be due to mounts being bad at the rear axle, but all those are on a car that have a rear wheel drive.

And even if the Scout have a 4wd drive it is not engaged when taking off, I don't have any slip or anything. Is it a possible culprit that it is the diff mounts?

I have this list of things to check:

  • Right Engine mount
  • Left Engine mount
  • Gearbox mount
  • Rear differential mounts

Anything more that would be obvious for me to check?
