Cruise stalk. Banging my head against a wall

Featured Replies

So I’ve finally got round to fitting my replacement cruise control stalk. I’ve got as far as steering wheel off and I can’t see where to proceed.

there’s a box on the bottom of the steering column which looks like it needs to drop down, as everything plugs into it - but I can’t see how to do so - it doesn’t want to budge and there are no obvious clips or screws I can see.

any help appreciated as the car is in bits! 😰

Can't offer you any direct experience as I haven't done this to an Octy yet but the parts explosions for the steering column are here and the steering wheel here.

There are also several youtubes (search for "octavia 2 steering column disassembly") such as these:

Thanks muchly! Had a good google but seemed to be getting conflicting info.

I’ll have a gander and pick it back up tomorrow. Spent the morning fitting and testing my connects2 handsfree/streaming kit and then started this. Beer o’clock anyone? 😁

Sorted!

the box of tricks on the underside of the steering column is held on by the poxiest little screw at the front. Didn’t have a bit small enough, so I drilled it out (sue me. This is 100% a bangernomics motor!)

you then have to take the ‘lid’ off the box, exposing the underside of a circuit board. you then have to very bloody carefully, prise this down away from the connectors that plug into it (after removing the black and yellow connectors at the very back of the board, which go under the dash)

Once prised away, you’ll see two clips to be eased off, then the second half of the lid will come away.

Now you can pull the clock spring/sensor stuff forward (clips again) and get your indicator stalk off.

refit is the reverse of removal.

That job has done me in today. Only way I clocked about removing the board was a video on retrofitting CC to a mk5 golf. The board had to be replaced so I figure it must pull away.
