Can embedded sim card be used to find vehicle after theft.

Featured Replies

Following a conversation today about tracking stolen cars, I wondered if the embedded sim car in our cars could be used to trace the location of the car ?

Before some wag asks "who would steal a Skoda", don't forget that you all own one 😉.

If you have the full Skoda Connect then the answer, subject to power considerations and the vehicle being stationary, is yes.

Whether they (if a Connect package isn't active) could or would do so is another matter.

That's the question then as I didn't renew Skoda Connect after the first year.

Do you think a professional car thief would leave the SIM card in the car?   I'm sure they know exactly how to disable that before they take the car back to their base.

I wouldn't know where it was - would you or anyone else?

I have no idea, but I'm not a professional car thief.  They seem able to disable them in all other makes of cars that have them that they steal, so I imagine if they were targettng Kodiaqs they would soon work out how to disable them.

You are speculating, the question remains to be answered.

He answered the question, he said he had no idea where it was located.

No rules against speculation AFAIK.

You make it sound like the embedded SIM is the same as in older cars where it's just a slot.

No, he answered a question, not the original question that I asked.

john999boy did answer my question, but then raised another question that was relevant to my original and remains open.

Technically yes, even without an active Skoda Connect subscription the hidden SIM is active as it is used to aid the emergency services on the vehicles location if the SOS system is triggered.

Legally or ethically I'd guess not. In a similar way to Apple and the examples of where they've not granted access to the authorities allowing them to unlock suspects or victims mobile devices I'd say it's easier, safer and less risky for Skoda to simply say no.

One of the reasons I own one is because insurance is cheaper. And the reason for that is (drum roll...)  "who would steal a Skoda". :D
