Exhaust misfiring/ growling noise

Featured Replies

Can anyone advise what this noise could be from (listen in attached video) it does it intermittently on my 16 reg Octavia 1.4tsi, I've taken it to the dealer under warranty but they cant find any issue.. it's doing my head it.. any advice would be appreciated

I would say that with that issue and the poor fuel economy in your other thread (where you never mentioned this) you need a competent mechanic to check out your car.

?

Is it a Skoda Dealership that the warranty is with on your 2016 car, and a Skoda Technician checking it out?

Someone has bashed a hole through the middle of the catastrophic convertor matrix and the dislodged pieces are rattling around.

If you remove all the material to avoid this then it resonates like a tin can.

It could also be a baffle in the silencer but sounds exactly like the former, if it is then you will also hear it from underneath the front beside the cat where the bits are bashing it from the inside.

Yes it is a skoda warranty.. taken it to my nearest dealership and they couldn't find an issue so when it next made the noise I drove back and showed the mechanic but when it went back in to the workshop again they couldn't find anything arrrghh

Thanks for that.

Any idea if it would be covered under the warranty? Should I be concerned having this issue on a 4 yr old low mileage car bought from a main dealer?

Its only something that a dodgy trader would do to a much older vehicle that had a blocked cat, unlikely to be the case with your vehicle, if it had been done then I would expect the manufacturer to refuse the warranty claim but if it is that then its probably broken up of its own volition and should be covered.

Given the age & mileage I would look for other causes first but it does sound exactly like loose material bouncing around as opposed to a partially detached baffle rattling.

Someone mischeviously inserted something?

Took it to skoda this morning they just drilled a hole through the exhaust 'to let the excess moisture out' (see attached pic) does that make any sense?

Yes it does, I was haunted by the fact that I had heard the noise before, your car has been swimming in the floods at some time.

Worth checking for water ingress in the spare wheel well.

Dont see any water there, on looking closely at the pic the exhaust joint looks quite bad, (see pic) should I be concerned? Thanks

So now you potentially have exhaust gasses leaking from the exhaust system into your car! Sorry, did you say this was a dealership?
