Clutch

Featured Replies

My 2015 Octavia 2.0tdi has a slightly heavy clutch. Not unbearable by any means just a bit heavier than previous Skodas. 86k so probably the original hence getting heavy. It also bites way low down on the pedal travel. Just off the floor when releasing. Doesn't affect gearchange, except when stone cold, the low gears are a bit snicky. Warm-perfect. The clutch take up is creamy smooth though. Usually the bite gets higher as a clutch wears.

Has anyone found the same?

Well, I had this problem on my first ever car.  The problem is down to the wear of the trust release bearings and is part of the clutch mechanism, New clutch, thrust plate and Slave Cylinder - this recently cost me £980 at West End Skoda in Edinburgh.  If you are being thorough, then I would also request a gearbox oil change - which will massively improve the gearbox and make gear changes SOOO much nicer.

If you aren't fussed with original parts, then I suggest pattened parts - cost will be closer to £700.  I am also assuming that you've been good and not abused the clutch.  Dual Mass Flyswheels are usually a £400 addition (luckily didn't need them when I had the clutch done on my VRS).

Yes, but that was on a GTi6 with 'auto-adjusting' cable clutch that routes next to the exhaust manifold on RHD models....French engineering at work 🤔

I would guess throw out assembly as above. Previous owner could've been a sit-at-red-lights-with-clutch-disengaged kinda guy.

Wow! £980. I priced clutch kit, slave cylinder and gearbox oil from TPS today and was £352 all in. My local garage, who are the best I've ever used, will be @ £150 for fitting. A lot less than your figures. Suppose it depends where you are but main dealers are just mega expensive, often for inferior work, than small locals.

Actually it only cost me half of that cost.  The car was under a Skoda Warranty and the selling dealer agreed to pay half towards a new clutch....so it had to remain under Skoda parts, labour for the 2 year warranty. The vehicle is a 67 plate car....it seems to be a common problem with clutches on the VRS with a manual gearbox.

Post update. Got new clutch kit fitted inc. release bearing and slave cylinder and changed the gearbox oil. Clutch kit and fitting (inc. changing gearbox oil) was £380. Got 2 litres of gearbox oil from Opie oils for £26.00. TPS were £32.00 per litre.

Clutch lovely and light now but no change to biting point. Still low down. Garage said only other thing is the master cylinder, which are known to fail, but very rarely. They also said the clutch action and gearchange are superb, which they are, and would be happy to live with it as is, so that's exactly what I'm gonna do. Probably being over fussy and that clearly is where the biting point is.

Not sure if I notice any difference with the new gearbox oil, but at least it's done so peace of mind there. Otherwise the car is fantastic. As smooth and virtually as quiet as any of my past Jags. Looks the nuts too.

Can't be any worse than a modern Renault, basically have to put your foot through the firewall from factory!

£380 to supply and fit a clutch (when you consider it is a book time of 5.3 hours)?? That is seriously cheap, i take it you didn't replace the DMF with that? What brand of clutch was it?

A certain PSA owned company did that on a 1980s plastic bodied car with self levelling suspension.

It would break and then the fix was to reroute it on RHD cars via another route with different cabling.

You would have hoped they would have learned not to do it again....

Didn't replace DMF and the clutch kit was LUK. The garage I use is fantastic. Great prices and work. Didn't take near 5.3 hours to do.

Just to add a PS. The clutch removed had minimal wear and would've done another 86k!
