Octy 2 pre-FL xenons not responding to VCDS

Featured Replies

'07 Octy 2 pre-FL Scout with dip xenons.  Beams light fine and do the wag dance on startup but settle at the top of adjustment and aimed at oncoming traffic.

A VCDS scan shows a fault with the headlamp range controller and the VCDS reset process does not work as the controller does not respond.

BTW I tried using the mechanical beam adjustment on the headlamp unit but it doesn't appear to do anything.

1 Fault Found:
01539 - Headlights Not Adjusted
005 - No or Incorrect Basic Setting / Adaptation

I'm initially suspecting connectors oxidising up but don't know where to find the range controller to start playing.

Can anyone help, please?

When you say the controller doesn't respond, what do mean?

The controller is clearly working and accessible as it's reporting a fault code. If it wasn't reachable then you would have an error that the controller can't be reached.

Have you tried this:

Yes, that's the route I followed to try the beam setting; response indicated it wasn't possible to make the setting.

I'm still learning my way around VCDS so as a double-check I'll go back to the car later, do a reset and then try resetting the beam level.  I'll then report exactly what responses I get.

You should also add a full autoscan up for more context :)

OK, will do after I rescan later. I was trying to be nice and not overwhelm peeps with info.

OK, results from the following:

1) scan "as-is" - see attached

2) follow xenons learning procedure as per https://www.ross-tech.com/vag-com/cars/xenonalignment.html

3) result adjusting/invalid and adjusting/not possible

4) reset

5) repeat scan

6) repeat step 3 - same

Results from both scans are in 1 file attached (even though the filename says "pre-reset" it's both)

Special Notes

  • If Headlight Adjustment (Basic Setting) fails, check Level Sensors.
  • Check Measuring Value Blocks (MVB) if Level Sensor Readings within Specification.
  • When stored in combination with 01537, fix that one first.
  • There have been reports of lowered vehicles displaying an error message in Basic Settings due to incorrect level sensor readings. If the vehicle height sensor(s) are bottomed out, it may be necessary to modify the sensor bracket to allow normal adjustment to occur. Check to make sure that the sensor arms do not have their pivots facing the wrong direction

So if I were you, I'd check both level sensors are in good condition. Maybe take a picture of the rear one to check it's pointing out rather than in?

It feels like one may be out of range preventing basic settings.
