Coolant temperature sensor and thermostat

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

does Škoda Fabia 1.0 81kw 2018 have COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR ? If so, can anyone send me a link to the spare part? I can´t find any at all www.onlinecarparts.co.uk and I can´t even find the section “COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR” under this engine. Nor any other spare part website, regardless if UK or abroad.

When I switch to my old car VW Passat 2.0 85kw 2005 it instantly shows me this section  https://www.onlinecarparts.co.uk/car-brands/spare-parts-vw/passat-3b3/15420/10653/coolant-temperature-sensor.html with for me well known part, which I had to replace few times with my 15 years with the Passat. It has 4 pins, 2 shows the temperature to the car control unit which I could access with my old VAG diagnostic and another 2 to the gauges on the dashboard.

If this Fabia does not have this, from where the dashboard shows and control unit knows the coolant temperature?

Also when I opened thermostat section for Fabia 1.0 81kw 2018 https://www.onlinecarparts.co.uk/car-brands/spare-parts-skoda/fabia-estate-nj5/128142/10195/thermostat.html it shows as a note at every single one “Thermostat fitted in water pump”.

What does it mean? Does the water pump need to be replaced as well together with thermostat? Again, with Passat it was quite easy job to change it.

And last think, I found a post from AGFalco here, saying that this engine has two thermostats

Thermostat 1 for cylinder head  It opens at a temperature of  87 °C or above

Thermostat 2 for cylinder block It opens at a temperature of 105 °C or above

However, I can find only one opening at 105 and second at 80. Something has changed?

This was in relation to the 1.2 TSI 4 cylinder engine not to the 1.0 TSI 3 cylinder one.

This means the thermostat's are fitted in the water pump but note there are two thermostats in the water pump.

Quote from, VW The New EA211 Petrol Engine Family:-

''A dual-circuit cooling system is used for engine cooling in all EA211 engines. With this system, the coolant is
channelled separately through the cylinder block and cylinder head at different temperatures. The temperature
regulation is controlled by two thermostats in the thermostat housing. The respective coolant temperatures differ
according to the engine.''

I don't know where the coolant temperature sensor is but I have found this image:-

''Coolant temperature sender G62'' appears to be attached to the back of the engine in between the turbo and the water pump.

The water pump is fitted to the cylinder head on the gearbox end of the engine.

This image is looking at the engine from behind, as if you were in the left hand seat, passenger seat for UK.

Have you asked a TPS depot?

Thanks, AG Falco

Can this have something to do with the fact that in this cold weather the coolant does not stay at 90 degrees when idling with full heating on?

So with 1.0TSI one opens at 80 C (instead 87 C with 1.2TSI) and second at 105 C (same with 1.2TSI) ?

The Temperature gauge is not accurate by design in the car.

If you look at the engine oil temperature reading in the MFD you will get a better idea.

Mine after 12 miles can still be in the low 80's C during the winter.

It can be above 100 C in the hot weather when being used.

After reading your other posts I don't think you have a problem except that it is cold outside.

Thanks, AG Falco

Unfortunately my VAG cable works only with models until 2005. Any idea for cheap one (for occasional use and monitoring only) which works with the new Fabia?

I know, that´s why the old Passat had by manufacturer set the gauge to shows 90 even when real was 75 - 105. To not scare people off their pants. Wondering why they did not "glue it" at 90 here.

Just realised that you meant MDF and not VAG. Sorry. Yeah the temperature in this weather is around 74 C after 6 km in the city and around 85 C after 15 - 20 km in the city. Is it a normal oil temperature? Should not be higher? But when idling it goes down together with the coolant temperature.

Sounds a little low to me.

To help mine warm up I have now blanked off the top radiator grill.

There is a post about this.

I now see low 90's C after 12 miles, I was getting low 80's C.

Thanks AG Falco

Just asking? You are taking your water temp reading off a calibrated quality aftermarket gauge, and not the one on the cars dash. The one on the car dash is so way off the actual temperature, it’s almost pointless.

I'm talking about oil temperature as displayed on the MFD.

Thanks, AG Falco
