It is wedged in all the way and doesn't adjust the volume or mute. Tried prying it out but no joy. Can these units be replaced and if so I'm assuming it is a steering wheel off job?

I think it's an unship of the airbag to access the wiring disconnect for the steering wheel buttons. If you had help, you could probably even get away without disconnecting the airbag if you didn't want to disturb it whilst changing the buttons👍

 

I'll see if I can dig out some photos of when I had my airbag out

Attached images of wheel below. I was doing a wheel change so had the airbag off. You can see the grey wiring for the steering wheel buttons tucked around the edge. 

 

The main disconnect is that black connector at the top.

 

I didn't transfer the buttons over but they looked easy to lift out and swap over.

On further digging I found a photo of the airbag. Theres the big yellow connector and a smaller black one which I believe is for the steering wheel buttons. Sorry, it was 2019 when I was in there. Hopefully someone who has done a recent swap can help you out better than me 🤣
