Has my local garage ruined my snow monster?

Featured Replies

You have chosen to ignore what I wrote precceding that which you have quoted and moreover the wishes of the OP.

My position would be the same as yours but I am able to understand the position of others, their viewpoint and what they want to achieve from the situation.

My car would never have gone into a garage for them to screw it up, unfortunately as I found to my cost on this exact subject I am as capable as any garage of screwing it up without paying for the priveledge.

Very much struggling to find a diff that I'm 100% sure will be suitable for my car.  Can someone help please?

I see that the same part 0BR525010B is used on Audi TT, S3, Golf R, Superb.  There are a few dead certs available but for too much money.

There are also several 0BR525010 without the letter suffix, locally and easily collected.  Dunno if they're any good to me though.  Anybody on here know???

I now know my first procurement had a Gen 5 Haldex off a 2014 & later model, hence the incompatible connector.  So I need a unit with a Gen 4 Haldex, or no Haldex at all, as I already have that on my knackered diff.

I'm rather out of my depth with this really.  Thinking an AA membership to cover me when it dies, get them to tow to the garage that ruined it and involve trading standards as suggested by @ejstubbs

You're overthinking this here. You already had a diff / haldex unit and sent it back as the haldex wasn't the one for your car. If you have a need for a diff, the haldex you have already could be swapped over (providing the basic fitment to the diff is the same).

Yes but the seller said I couldn't swap the Haldex without voiding the 6 month warranty.

I don't understand the significance of the last letter in the diff part number, 0BR525010A/B/C/E/G whatever.

e.g is this what I'm looking for: -

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/193902391746?hash=item2d257bb1c2:g:57cAAOSwO9VgL4No

The item photo shows 0BR525010 but on my car I have a 0BR525010B.

Contact/email these people with your VIN and see if they can help.

Thought I'd give you good folk an update...

I eventually found a good used diff on gumtree - was a 400 mile round trip to collect from Scotland!!!  Local garage honoured their promise to fit free of charge.  I paid about £300 for the diff, £80 for my mate to drive me up to collect it and £35 to the garage for oils etc.

The best part of all this is my Yeti is now in perfect running order again, the droning noise has completely gone.

Now though I'm not so sure that my local garage did ruin my snow monster.  There are a few other long-standing problems that have miraculously resolved themselves since having the diff replaced: -

1. vibration at 1400 revs in high gear (high torque?)

2. fuel economy

The vibration I had pretty much forgotten about as I had adjusted my driving style to prevent it happening.  But on a slight incline in 5th, giving it some throttle caused a substantial rattle from underneath - like it's going to stall or something.

Fuel economy is over 10% improved.  I always reset the trip counter and fill it all the way so I know how much I'm getting from a tank.  Now I easily get 450 miles every tank but prior to the diff replacement 400 was the absolute max I'd get.

So I reckon the dealer in Stockport broke it when they did the Haldex service at 40K.  Local garage just got unlucky and tipped it over the edge.  I don't know if this is a logical conclusion to draw from my experience because I am no expert on cars.  I remember the Haldex service and the Dieselgate recall thing were done at roughly the same time.  I put the fuel economy down to the Dieselgate fix.  The vibration from the propshaft probably started around the same time - it certainly wasn't always like that.  I thought it was the exhaust loose actually.

I reckon I probably owe my local garage an apology and a days labour.  What do you lot reckon!?!?

You say you are not sure, so I think that sums it up and answers your own question. I would be tempted to take in a case of wine as a goodwill gesture and a thank you, for them  honouring there promise in a difficult situation.
