Low oil pressure

Featured Replies

Hello , my skoda 1.6 diesel was due for a mot as i don't do many miles i took it for a run to warm up it prior to test , around 20 miles later low oil pressure light came on with a noise attached pulled into services and checked oil , level was fine , towed to garage , garage said it was turbo so got a recon turbo fitted , garage took sump off and cleaned pick up pipe , unfortunately there was shavings in sump , garage is saying maybe crankshaft bearings but i have just forked out almost £3k now , see attached photo , any ideas .

How far did you drive with low oil pressure warning?  if you ever get that it means stop immediately as without oil pressure you will start getting metal on metal wear of engine components usually starting with big ends. With that amount of debris in the sump I'd say major damage done. There is a chance that this could be some turbo bearing debris from the oil return.

(Edit) Also wondering if the original fault wasn't the turbo and something catastrophic had failed with your engine causing the debris and low oil pressure - this in turn caused the turbo failure.

I'm afraid stripdown etc probably required

Thanks for the reply bigjohn , yeah i tried to keep it to a minimum say 1.5 miles i was on the motorway with my 2 kids onboard and no hard shoulder so had to limp into services , i got the car back after having recon turbo fitted , sump / pick up cleaned etc but it now sounds like i have rod knock .

Not suprising given the remnants of the bearing shell backing material in the sump, I had a tiny bit of hope that it might have been a thrust bearing spat out but no longer.

Terminal I'm afraid.

You could investigate a used engine - potentially more money after bad as they say...
