Damaged key

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I managed to drive over my spare key...idiot ! It still works after a style, but it is 'distressed'. Today I attempted  to use the fob to open the car, no go. I had to change the battery a short while ago and now it ppears it needs changing again. I opened the car using the blade in the key hole, put the key in the ignition and turned it which caused the alarm to go off.

My local stealer has quoted me huge numbers and delay to get one. Is there somewhere that forum members use for a replacement service, the car is a '64 plate, thanks goodness the second key still works.

@ktm690rr - I think you've cracked the immobiliser/alarm chip in the "spare" key. AFAIK a VAG dealership is one of the few places that can supply a replacement, and program it to your car.

The key blade has to be cut specifically for your car and the new transponder chip then has to be coded to the car with the computer.

There is a possibility that someone out there could do it for you but it's most likely a dealer only job unfortunately.

You might be lucky with an auto locksmith.  There are a few bigger places that can cut the keys, but might not be able to do the coding.

I have a vague recollection someone mentioned some of the bigger Timpsons branches can make up a new key and copy it from second key.   What they can’t do is recode the vehicle if you have lost a key and need to change the code for security to stop key finder driving off

You may want to try opening the car with the good remote, then trying to start with the damaged key in the ignition - keep the good key away from the ignition which may hide the issue - which may give a better understanding of the extent of damaged. My key supplier is based in Huddersfield which is obviously no use to you, but he has cut/coded key and remotes for a Fabia and a 67 Polo with full access to the car - think this was around £130 to give you a ballpark figure. Given this, someone local to yourself may be able to offer this service.

Locally some locksmiths can do this. I was quoted a reasonable price recently at one.  I believe that Timpsons can happily under cut the main dealers at their bigger shops. And that includes programming the key.
