It's "self-adjusting". You should be able to get it to tighten up by:-

1. Stop on level ground and engine off
2. Apply foot brake as hard as you can and hold it on
3. Now, with the foot brake on, attempt to uproot the handbrake lever

5. Release handbrake then foot brake
6. Reapply handbrake and note shorter travel.

I think he means the handbrake cable.

 There is a requirement to know what rear brakes are fitted, drum or disc, and exactly what the issue is as having had 2 with rear drums and 1 with rear discs I know that they can have their own unique issues  - drums never really self adjusted and I have found that I have had to manually adjust the wedges by taking the drum off, and on the disc version the handbrake operating arm can seize in the caliper. As usual, the devil is in the detail when trying to remotely identify issues.

This is why some of us are pedants. If you ask me about adjusting the handbrake, see #2 above; OTOH is you asked me about setting up new cables, that's a whole other question...

Pedantry is a symptom of an underlying condition, broadly, it's the expression of a desire for a level of certainty and precision which cannot realistically be achieved.
