Hi,

 

Just wondering if it should be 5w30 or 5w40?  I keep finding conflicting answers.

 

Any particular brand?

Fixed or Variable Service Intervals is VW 504 00  (VW 504 / 507)     (Dealership use that.)

so 5w 30 FS III.

 

Fixed Service / Oil & Filter change VW 502 00,  so 5w 40 FS.   I would be using that.   No particular brand, ASDA / TESCO etc, COMMA / Fuchs / Quantum etc etc.  

 

VW recommend Castrol, i would not bother about that.

Those engines will be fixed service to 502 00 spec or flexible service to 504 00 spec..

 

Don't go by "w" rating as that can be different but still meet the respective VAG 502 00 or 504 00 spec...

 

I use top end oils..Castrol Titanium, or Mobil 1 or Fuchs...& because I'm in a cold place, but the engine is tuned I currently use Castol Edge Titanium FST 0w40 (A3/B4)..which is to VAG 502 00 spec..

Have you moved from the Moray Firth area of Scotland to Siberia?

 

Fuchs is the VW Groups chosen suppliers in the UK.

Nothing special, just as Castrol is not.   

VW Group / German engines out of warranty have among the highest failure rate.  Oddly it is not Japanese, South Korean or even French manufacturers that recommend different manufacturers oils.

I have Fuchs gear oil currently...& Castrol engine oil as that's what they used at the factory & spec'd for the engine at build, & the reason for 502 00 is that I service my car every year & I don't do more than 10,000miles/yr...

 

I like the extra range of 0w40....the car is tuned & leaving it to get frozen in -10C & colder in the cairngorms or other colder places such as Glenshee or the west coast is what it has to cope with....
