Updating Amundsen satnav in Octavia MkII 2013

Featured Replies

I am trying to update the satnav on my Octavia Mk II (early 2013). It is an Amundsen MIB 1, I think (it just says MIB). I went to the update website, entered my VIN, downloaded the zip, copied then deleted the old files from the 2017 update on the SD card, unzipped then copied the new files onto it. Stuck it in the car and it goes round and round 'checking navigation data'. Is this right? How long is this supposed to last? I hung on for at least five minutes, and then ejected it, thinking there must be something wrong. I went through the process again, with the same result, endless checking. I then deleted the new files and copied over the old ones and it worked straightaway.

What am I doing wrong? Is there a trick to copying over new files? How long does it take for the satnav system to update once the card is reinstalled? I can only find answers relating to later versions of Amundsen (eg the file is called 'markets' in mine, not 'maps').  Help!

Yes - delete the old files first, then put the new files on.

You can also format the SD card to FAT32 and copy the files on afterwards.  SD cards take time to read information to memory - be patient.

Thank you very much for responding. I thought the Skoda SD cards had secret identifying files on them so you shouldn't reformat them? And how long should it take for the system to check the new navigation data, would you say? I can be patient..... but I was worried that it was just spinning aimlessly!

I assume you actually have a MK3 Octavia as the MK2 never got MIB headunits :)

Skoda MIB headunits use the SD CID (card ID) for identification. This cannot be wiped by formatting so it's safe to format...

Yes, you're right about the Mark3, the reg is 63 and we got it in January 2014, I always wrongly think of 2013. Any helpful hint about how long it might take for the system to recognise the data? Would it be quicker if I reformatted the card?

I've never used a MIB1 headunit but it feels like it should only take a few minutes. Maybe go for a drive and see if it figures itself out.

I always format my card for map updates but as long as everything has been deleted, it's not 'necessary'...

OK, thanks, will give it a spin and see if it does anything sensible. I have to drive to Scotland on Thursday, so if it hasn't worked itself out by then I'll just reinstall the old files and start again another time...

Well, it must have been something you wrote, varaderoguy or langers2k:  I didn't reformat, but deleted, reinstalled, reloaded in the car and BINGO, it worked immediately. Thank you for the confirmation that I was doing the right thing, it made me persevere!

Well, you don't have to worry anymore as you've downloaded the last & latest update. VW have dropped support for map updates on MIB1

If you are still stuck, I'm v.close to the A1 just north of the Scottish Border.

This is true - VAG have dropped updating the old MIB1 units.  The other way forward on that one is that you will need an MIB2 replacement unit.

Thanks varaderoguy - I'm hoping it's going to work tomorrow as it did finally yesterday. Though it's also true I don't really need a satnav to drive to Edinburgh from London :) In Edinburgh itself I'll have to use Google as I'm sure no satnav can keep up with the eternal roadworks!
