with the petrol engine you would be changing down a gear, the engine is then screaming it's head off and using more fuel as well.

 

Not with the 1.5tsi. Modern petrol turbos are very good, on par with turbo diesel low down. Those have a flat torque curve from 2k rpm onwards iirc.
