Problems with Amundsen Navigation system (Dec 2018 version fitted)

Hello Skoda Group,

I've just signed up tonight as I've a long standing small problem with my Amundsen nav system.......getting expert help has, shall I say been difficult to find....from either my local dealer (who is trying....in many senses of the word) and Skoda customer services.....this is the biggest misnomer ever.

Anyway I digress

I have full functionality of the system for navigation with the exception it does not show "local" traffic hold ups/delays .....ie I do not get little red lines along the road I am travelling. (TMC function works OK, but this tends to be national roads systems news)

I've previously owned a MK7 Golf with the same system (Discover in VW range) , my daughter has a Kodiaq with Amundsen, I've access to a BMW with full sat nav and my good old trust google maps on my iphone........all these systems display local traffic problems.

Anybody had similar problems and do have a solution?

Thanks

probably not.

however, answer a few questions to help me find out if i'm helping:

does your amundsen use rds/tmc for the traffic information?

if so, can you receive classic fm from your location*?

By way of explanation, as i understand it, tmc is old school traffic information delivery - via classic fm - and is/was likely to be phased out with the planned demise of the fm service. (

for what it's worth i believe the fm service is likely to continue due to complaints about the planned closure.

Traffic information in newer kit is delivered as data, either piggy-backed from your phone (e.g. recent tomtom) or dedicated data sim in a new(ish) model car.

* likely to be 101.8 mHz from north-west lancashire for you, according to

https://ukradiolive.com/classic-fm/frequency

Hi Johnh510,

Thanks for you reply.

I have TMC as one of my side buttons on the Satnav system, and it is active and shows up big stuff on the national network of roads.

I can receive FM and Classic, and also DAB albeit a bit patchy.

It does not show up local or A road congestion (which the other sources do), so the only time I find out about them, is when I'm sat in them!

I thought that my Amundsen system was virtually the same as my previous VW Discover nav system (on a 17-18 plate MK7 facelift Golf), which had this display feature.

It remains unclear to me where the traffic updates are fed from......but I had assumed it should be fed piggy backed from the phone or via a plugged in SIM.

I didn't buy the car new, got it 6 months old, so never got a dealer handover, however I've had it back to my local dealership (100 mile round trip) several times, where they've re-loaded software, been in though with Skoda technical, but so far not come back to say either ....sorry this feature is not supported ....or yes it should work and here is the fix.

The last tech interrogation was only last week, so I'm waiting to see what they come up with

Thanks for your help so far and the links, (I'll read them a little later when I've got a bit more time)

OK

next question:

does you fabia have skoda connect?

AFAIK it is built into a lot of Skodas from 2018 onwards, and when suitably activated is capable of all sorts of data use, including traffic data for satnav.

(I drove a newish fabia "Drive" recently and it had skoda connect - I assumed it was a "Drive" thing, but your "SEL" should also be well specified.)

Hi John,

Yes I do have Skoda connect, on the main screen there is a little globe icon, it is normally showing red, however I've recently worked out how tp connect my iphone and can get it to show white.

It is a bit of a faff as I have to turn on personal hotspot each time I get into the car (it doesn't grab it automatically ....so far) , but to get functionality of this there is an annual license fee of £45-50

The functions within it and pretty worthless and of little value to me ......I don't really need to know my mpg or service status when I'm not it the car.......

So currently my license has expired and whilst I can link to my WLAN setting, it doesn't look like I am getting the functions I am looking for ........my feeling about the chargeable functionality isn't "Simply Smart" ......but "Simply rip off"

I'm currently waiting for  my local Skoda sealer and Skoda UK Customer services to tell me that this functionality only comes at a cost......but intriguingly even ofter months of checks and multiple emails ......they don't seem to know what you are advising above.

What does AKAIK mean?

Thanks for your help so far!

re-read your last post, and thought about it -

Did "local traffic" work when the licence was valid?

If so, the reply by @john999boy in the "Skoda connect - worth it?" thread answers the question:

I' not sure what Connect does but I do connect my phone via WLAN and then the Sat Nav shows live traffic delays on the map - would this stop if I don't renew Connect?

Thanks

Mark

Yes it would stop Mark. £44 to get another years worth.

As you say, it's a surprise Skoda can't come up with an answer.... maybe they are confused by TMC doing what it can, or can't be ***** to find out.
