Voluntary / Compulsory Excess

Featured Replies

I've just done a price comparison run for insurance renewal. As usuall asking for 0 voluntary excess.

Given that my current policy is genuinely £0.00 excess (except for young drivers, non approved repairs and a bit for windscreens) I was surprised to see how much compulsory excess (often 200-300 pounds) that some of the results were wanting to add on, and none of them had a £0 compulsory excess

Anyone else noticed this, or are my memories of previous renewals rose-tinted and I just got lucky before ?

Hi.

Just to let you know that I can't think of any of our extensive number of  insurance schemes that offer the option of a £0 excess. I think in the current climate there would be very few insurers offering this in my experience.

Regards,

Dan.

Hi,

I agree with Dan, and we don't have any Insurers who offer a zero excess.

We also find that a number of people get caught out by the whole voluntary excess side of things. It is not unusual for us to see that the compulsory excess has been missed when we are verifying best quote details.

As long as you are aware (it sounds like you are) that both voluntary and compulsory excesses can exist, and you check these amounts, you should be ok.

If we can help with a quote at this time, please feel free to call us.

You have confused the two different terms, you start by talking about a zero voluntary excess and then complain about the compulsory excesses which are not "added on" as you describe but an integral part of the policy and included in the premium quoted, you can voluntarily reduce the premium by opting for a voluntary excess offered.

I'm not particularly complaining that the compulsory part exists, was just wondering if that part - in other people's experiences - seems to be bigger than it used to be.

My current policy - and their proposed renewal - has a £0 total excess. So I was surprised to see nothing similar in the results from the price comparison website
