Brake rim rust on new IV

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I finally took delivery of my new Sportline IV yesterday, it is on a 71 plate and has done 3k, below is a pic of the general state of the wheels/discs. Do they seem right to you, it would appear the coating has also come of the wheelnuts too?

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Hi @TankTankBoom, from my experience the disk and hub look normal. I had mine detailed last  year and the detailer took note of the rusty looking hub and cleaned and sprayed the hubs silver. They look great now. The disks will polish up when used. I'm not sure about the wheel nuts, no issue with mine.

The wheel nut covers has been common on VAG cars for quite a few years. I believe people say caused by hand car washes. Some people have managed to clean up or buy cheap replacements. Was a thread in a forum recently where someone used some clear lacquer of sorts to prevent it happening again. Given how new the car is you could complain to the supplying dealer.

Looks normal on the hubs.

The chrome damage is generally caused by TFR used in car washes

There is no coating on the OE ones and will look worse soon enough.

As your car is new I’d paint them.

When my rears got replaced I went for Brembo disks as they’re coated and look nice

For painting I’d say use hammerite smooth silver or black and do a good few coats, probably be easier with brush on rather than aerosol

Could have been me

They’re still looking great :)

As far as I can see, the discs look pretty normal because there is no rust on the wearing surface, just on the hub and outer edge.

The wheel nut covers are a different matter though.
