CV Joint; Am I missing washers?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have an:

Skoda Octavia, Mk2 2007, 2.0Tdi VRS PD 1Z5 170bh, Estate (no mods)

I am currently replacing the front driver side CV Joint.

After watching YouTube tutorials on fitting new Joints, I have noticed that in nearly all videos two washers are slid along the Driveshaft; placed on the inside of the boot up passed the the circlip when fitting the new CV.

I think there called either;

Driveshaft/ CV Joint

Taper Collar/ Axle Washer/Spacer ring??

The first looks to be an ordinary washer (I am unsure of dimensions), the other a thick washer with a sort of rounded flange?

I have watched the video of myself taking the CV off and there definitely wasn't any washers on previously (I have had the car 2 years don't have full history), so I haven't lost them, I'm just wondering if there should be any?

Also the new CV Joint (Febi bilstein) didn't come with any washers, yet it did have the boot, Juliet clips, circlip, center wheel bolt, greece... So now I'm thinking maybe it isn't supposed to have them 🤔

Attached are photos taken from the YouTube tutorial to show better what I'm trying to explain.

Any help would be much appreciated

That is super duper useful!

Thank you!

Top tip. Slide every thing that comes off onto a cable tie when you are dismantling. That way things stay in the right order and in the right orientation. It will all be covered in thick grey grease so hard to tell what’s what.

I once forgot to replace the thrust washer when doing a CV joint many years ago. It was horrible and noisy. Basically had to do the whole job again at 6pm at night.

Soud advice, thank you.

To be honest I have been pretty good at bagging and labeling what I took off, I also took photos at each stage, so I was a bit angry at myself, however, thanks to MicMac I have been able to determine my driveshaft is the only model (out of 10 variations) that dose not have the washers.

So panic over, thank you all for your help 😁
