Valve clearances and adjustment order

Featured Replies

Hi, i have a 2000 Fabia 1.4 8 valve.

Can anyone tell me or point me to a posting for the valve clearance values for the inlet and exhaust valves plus the adjustment order?

The push rods are all steel.

I have had the head skimmed and am trying to reset everything .

Any help gratefully received!!!

Thanks.

Do you have an engine code for the car?

Do you mean the VIN?

I can help. I've done the head gasket on mine. Give me a few mins and I'll post the valve clearance stuff.

Engine ID AMF BNM BNV some value like this in your car registration document, it's also printed on engine block where it meets gearbox.

Make sure you leave about ten mins between setting each individual valve to allow time for the oil to bleed out of the hydraulic lifter, otherwise it won't work (as I soon I found out). Don't move the crankshaft after adjustment, leave the adjustment tension to squeeze the oil out for at least ten mins. Only after this, turn the crankshaft & move on to the next valve. Do the same for each valve. If you don't do this you will find that the valves get held open resulting in no compression and potential damage to valves/pistons.

Hi TMB, many thanks for this.

I drained all the oil days ago. More like water actually, so no problem there! Do you have the clearances handy?

I have looked all over for the code on the engine. Can't find it. The car has been re-registered in France, and again i can't find anything that looks like what you have described.

There are no actual clearances, you just follow that procedure.

It doesn't matter. The 1.4, 8 valve engines are all the same for our purposes.

It doesn't matter that you drained the oil. There will be residual oil in the lifters that needs some time between adjustments to squeeze out.

I was just reading through it and realised that was what it was saying. Saves me buying some gauges i guess. 😲

The last time i did this was on a Midget about 30 years ago, and on that occasion i definitely left a gap. Sort of goes against my better judgement and a bit scary to be honest.

Yeah it seems weird having no actual measurement but it's actually very simple to do.

You have been a great help. I need to get this done tomorrow. Daughters' car and everything's hanging on Dad to sort it.  Much appreciated.

You don't need a gap just a preload on the hydraulic valve lifters.

No problem at all 🙂

Believe it or not these engines were modified by VW to have hydraulic lifters.

Yes, i have read alot about that, however this car doesn't have them. So am i right to think that i still need to do the tappet adjustments using a gauge?

I assure you it does have them if it's a 1.4, 8  valve. The pushrods just drop into them.

The tappets are not in the head, they're in the block with the camshaft.

Thank you for explaining. If i look down into the hole the rod sits in there is a concave surface with a hole for the oil. I guess this is the top of the hydraulic lifter. Apologies for questioning you.

Yep that's them. No need to apologise 🙂

OK. More confusion. Tappets used to be just under the rocker cover for easy access. I guess the things i am going to adjust tomorrow, that look very much like the tappets of old must be now called something else!!!
