Is the 1.6l TDI engine any good ?

Featured Replies

HI,

I have a 14 year old Scout with the 2.0l, 8V PD engine. Only done 93k miles, uses no oil between services and at its last MOT its emissions were almost non-existant. Around town, 40 mpg is the norm, on a steady run at 70, 50mpg is normal, best ever (recently) was 57 mpg - not bad for an old 2.0l engine.

Has very good cruise control & rear parking sensors, HID headlights still good and everything "above ground" is fine. The problems start underneath !! Just had its latest, interim, service and a whole can of worms was found. Needs - new front and rear discs and pads & new CV boots all round. Now thats the cheap ? bit ! cluch is almost finished and there is a small rattle from the DMF ,mind you it has been like that for a number of years. Exhaust still OK & front suspension & Haldex but for how long ? Don't want to start throwing money at what may be a lost cause.

Bought the car for towing (1200kg caravan + extras) which it was excellent at doing, but now no longer tow so don't need 2.0l power - though I shall miss the easy way it gets down the road.

After all that ramble, I will get to the point. I NEED A NEW(ER) CAR !!! Would like to stay with diesel, but downsize to say 1.6 BUT are they any good ??? The 2.0l PD engine is very good and I will miss all that torque, but have been looking at the 1.6l TDI 115PS but hearing expensive problems with EGR etc.

Any advice on cars & engines (even petrol ones) would be much appreciated - will stay with the Octavia model, if I can, though may have to downsize to a Fabia.

Cheers, Lloyd

A 1.6TDI is going to be a little bit better on fuel, smoother and cheaper on tax. PD's pull from low down, CR's like to rev a bit more. Everything's going to want a set of brakes one day.

It's probably worth pricing up a clutch and flywheel so you know what the numbers are saying. Keep at the back of your mind that a 1.6 will probably want a set of injectors at some stage.

Any particular reason why you're looking for a 1.6 rather than a 2.0? I can't see a lot of reason other than road tax bands and a very slight amount of economy, but my impression is that the 2.0 is generally more reliable.

Try the 1.2 TSI like in our Leon it’s 105BHP. If you don’t need a diesel it more than does the job without the expense of a diesel and associated issues. Not sure if the Octavia came with this engine though. I purposely went Mark3 they look gorgeous and it’s a cam belt not chain. £20-30 Road tax. 55mpg as per trip computer on a long run fully laden. About 35-45 around town. Plenty of get up and go if you put your foot down. Torque of a diesel it does not have though

I have a 1.6TD 105 hp; now 10 years old but 7 years since I bought it. The main thing to worry about is the dieselgate "fix".

Avoid any with the fix (called a Service Action by Skoda) as you will be plagued by EGR and injector problems. A sticker in the boot showing 23R6 confirms this action has been carried out. I avoided the fix despite much pressure by Skoda.

Without the fix the engine is a delight. The gearing is such that you need to change out of 1st gear very early (recommended within three car lengths) but from then on the torque is high and pulls well. One interesting aspect is that it learns your style of driving. When I first got the car i found it best to leave the gear changes until it was about 1700 rpm in the next higher gear.

Now, with most of my driving around town, I can pull away easily from 1200 rpm with moderate torque. Fuel consumption is 55mpg in town and 60+ on long trips. Best long journey consumption was over 70 mpg using the 50mph and less roads of East Anglia.

I am still on the original injectors and EGR.

My wife has a Fabia with the 1.2 l, 90bhp engine and that also performs well in that car.

i have a 2013 1.6 105bhp cayc.

i dont k ow if its had the fix, but probably as i got from the local skoda dealer.

have it nearly 4.5yrs now, and ive had no major issues.

about once every 4months on average, if i go from motorway cruise to stopped (toll) to hard launch back up to speed i might get the coil light flashing at me until i restart, but it doesnt affect performance.

other than that its been the usual breaky stuff like a window regulator, bearings, and it got a new rear caliper when i was buying it.

Hi,

Thanks for your thoughts and advice. Car just passed its 11th ? MOT,  state of brakes mentioned but nothing else. Will try and have a drive in a 1.6TDI, (16 to early 17 plate) but am prepared to be a bit  disapointed. May have a look at other makes or another 2.0lTDI but without four wheel drive.  Don't do many miles now so fuel consumption doesn't come into the equation. After over 13 years driving a diesel, don't know if I want to go back to petrol (last car was a Subaru Forester, excellenr 4x4 with low ratio box but very underpowered - non turbo 2.0l) are petrol engines these days producing too much power for their own good ?

Cheers,

Lloyd
