Skoda Octavia buying guidance

Featured Replies

Hi,

Hope you are well. I have been researching skoda octavia a lot lately and thinking to buy one. I liked the VRS model but it is over my budget. Also, I could not understood the difference between various engine types. If someone can explain please? I am basically buying car to drive for family trips and limited city driving. Which one is better out of these below?

a) Octavia 2.0 TDI 150 SE L 5dr DSG

b) Octavia 1.5 TSI 150 PS 6G

c) Octavia VRS 2.0

Thanks,

Ro

There are 5 engines.

1.0 TSI 3-cyl petrol

1.5 TSI 4-cyl petrol

2.0 TSI 4-cyl petrol

1.4TSI 4-cyl petrol/hybrid eletric

2.0 TDI diesel

VRS has the most powerful engines and the most equipment included without having to select any options.

I think for a family 1.5 TSI engine makes the most sense, it's powerful and fuel efficient and cheap, though I wouldn't get the manual.

Also depends on what do you prefer.

Do you want an automatic or manual?

Do you drive alot?

a) if you drive like alot.

b) for well, the engine is fairly good and can go low on consumption.

c) like you said, too expencive :)

I agree on zetzet, that the 1.5TSI is a good engine. I've driven over 80k (km) with and older generation and it was really good (with DSG though).

@rohitsinghWelcome to the forum.

?

Which country are you buying the car in?

The two that are in you price range (A and B), are both good engines, but your driving requirements will determine which is better for you. I have the exact model and setup you mention in a). Its a great car and very relaxing to drive, being a good diesel it has great economy on decent journeys and cheap to run. Works well with the DSG but if you are using it for short journeys go for Petrol. SE L has plenty of Tech, possibly too much, but those issues are for another thread! Whatever you go for make sure the software is up to date and the ACC works as it should.

Not sure I would go for a manual car in either form but 1.5 petrol owners will know more of what that setup is like. DSG definitely works fine for the 2.0TDi. Mine has a few extras but standard SE L trim is fine imho.

At the moment in UK the diesel makes no sense.

Its official fuel consumption is about 20% better than petrol, but diesel in UK now costs nearly 20% more than petrol.  So fuel savings are almost nil, but diesel version costs more.   Diesel is also unsuitable for regular short journeys due to complicated emission equipment clogging up if used for local travel.

Last months car sales in UK had just 3.1% as diesel.

Unless you live in a country with different relative fuel prices, buy the petrol.  The tsi petrol engines are brilliant, but work best with DSG gearbox.  If you choose manual gearbox and drive in urban areas you will find you need to do lots of frequent manual gear changes to keep engine at its ideal rev range.

I’m driving a 1.5tsi manual; as others have said it’s a good engine, powerful enough and economical on fuel.

I have driven a 1.0 mild-hybrid DSG Octavia mk4 for 8.5k miles (long story in another thread), I would buy a DSG next time, but with the 1.5 engine. I’m borderline for a diesel in terms of annual mileage and balancing costs etc.
